Anyone have this problem with NetZero?
Since Ive got an ancient system, (Pentium S 133, windows 95, 56k modem) it may not be a problem for most, but I thought Id throw it out just in case.
After initial installation NetZero auto down loads enhancement software, AKA commercials. Once this was completed, I ran into a slew of problems: SLOW connects & disconnects, browser crashes, system lockups to name a few.
After a few uninstall & reinstalls, I emailed tech support. Got a nicely put, Itll download no matter what. too bad.
I uninstalled and re installed the NetZerosetup.exe. In the subdirectory NETZERO/basket theres a single .SPE file that stores the auto downloads.
Zero lengthed the file using COPY CON, then changed the attribute to read only.
Its been over a month with no problems.
Just thought Id pass that along.
Dude~! a new Dell can be had for a few hndred bucks nowadays
You can probaly find a computer 3 years old (yet still 20 times better than the one you have) in the paper for $50 bucks
...assuming you're using a version of windows that is.
welcome to the 21st century...
for $200 you can upgrade to a 1Ghz motherboard, processor and memory.... just a thought.
You should set up a pay pal account and post your account on this thread.
Once you reach $50 you will have enough to go out and buy a decent computer, or at least a better one than you have.
Collect $120 more and you will have quality dialup service for a year.
This is the best advice I could give you.
Sorry.
The big discount computer stores will sell great computers, such as HP models that are blazingly fast, for as little as $440-- that's what we did for our adult son who desperately needed a new system; NOTHING WORKS ON OLDER, SLOW systems like you have, my friend. Just face the hard, cruel facts, and beg, borrow, and get a new system. The one I quoted above is 17" monitor included, Windows-XP oper. system, a nice assort, of software, 256k RAM, 40Gigabyte HARDdrive, and a warranty from a company that will be around to back it up, Hewlett- Packard.
HTH
Yes, I agree...THROW IT OUT.
And go buy yourself a decent computer.
Forgive me for saying "NOTHING"...a slip of the tongue!! Sorry. I hope the meaning is caught. I meant to say anything new that is developed and tested on the unsuspecting public, almost never works on the older systems... I do have a few of them; can never part with them either. hehe! The new Pentium III and IV are groovy, man...sayeth Mr. Flapdoodle, cheers!
I wish that would work for my problem. I can't use a Windows based PC. I need a Mac for school. Most of the graphic art software they're making me use won't run on Windows.
Gravel
I guess I should clarify, this isn't their free service. $9.95/mo, if I recall correctly.
Dude! I liked those commercials.... yea, I know. But we're on a pension, plus I've got this all set up with software, etc. etc.
Thanks for the reply, but actually, this system works fine for me (Shocker!) Wasn't lamenting the age of the system, just passing along a fix if anyone else had this problem. Take care
Lose the NetZero and get Juno. Much better service.
Juno. A name from the past. Thanks for the tip.
I've been using it for free for years as a dial up alternative...when I'm in the woods with my laptop hooked up to my cell phone for instance. (Sometimes ya just gotta go Freepin').
