HOLIDAY BREAKFAST

As the daylight invades
A most tenacious sleep,
And the odour of fresh coffee
Up worn stairs creep.

Bacon and sausage
Cooking in their fat,
No more persuasion
Needed than that.

Hot toast and butter-
Eggs boiling in a pan.
Marmalade and fresh orange juice
And home made jam.

A handful of cereal
With a splash of fresh milk,
Sunlight plays on dust-motes
Like threads of golden silk.

Breakfasts like this
You could never make so well,
For this is the breakfast
Of a holiday hotel.
