Alternative search engine(s)to Google

Posted on 02/16/2005 9:17:04 AM PST by utahguy

Since google has been "in the news", ref:

I thought I'd start this post for alternatives. It is by no means complete: perhaps fellow FR Warriors will add to it.

A decent place to start is:
http://searchenginewatch.com/

Not only to get the latest in search engine news, but a good teaching tool on search engines and a rather comprehensive list of engines.

http://www.dogpile.com/

Before Google, dogpile was an up and comer. However, it's a meta sight which includes Google in their search.

Hotbot used to be a biggie. One advantage is they run a "bare bones" alternative, much faster with those with an old system (like mine)

This is an old site of yours truely. On it is a large list of search engines. It hasn't been updated in a few years, but most of the links still stand. It'll direct you to some pretty off beat places.
This is just a start. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if these links have to be cut & paste and not "clickable" gotta crank up the ol' HTML.

Just ran a few comparisons to Google, and you're right on. Great search site.

I used to use all these. Glad to see they still exist.

I'm lazy and use advanced Google.

However, it's aggravating still, cuz apparently you cannot use Boolean operators anywhere. Sometimes I'd like to have an OR in there rather than everything being included all together.

That's why I liked the old sites where you could use Boolean.

Good point. HotBot used to use/accept Boolean. My guess is that they've, like most other things, been dumbed down.
Boolean is great for getting really specific in a search. any onther inputs on this?
