JAVA - Applets Question (Vanity)
self | 02/14/05 | self

I know this is a political site, but there are so many people here, I thought I'd ask may question here. I am self studying Java and am wondering if I put an applet into an HTML comment to a board like Free Republic (say if you rolled over it with your mouse you get a barking dog or someting) would it pass through the server? If it did pass through, would Microsoft IE give its warning about security, to everyone who openned the thread.

TOPICS: Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: computers; java; languages
Thanks in advance.

I'd be highly suprised. Java is precompiled. If they allowed it through, they might as well give you an open door to the system because theres no telling what is in your applet.

Because it would be a fair amount of work. I'd have to write the code and find a place to store the code accessible to all - much like the jpeg's you see in other posts. If it would work, I'd love to do as a learning method. If it wouldn't work, I'd just be wasting a lot of time.

The security problem on the server side is mute as I see it. They would just pass through text, exactly like an href to a pic. But I think you are right, they probably open href's to make sure they are not porno or something. I was more worried about the receiver side, but now that I think about it - I'll just play (learn) locally or with friends.

The security on the server side is not moot. I run servers. Never allow precompiled code without knowing what it is.

Thank You. I was right in coming here with this question. I got my answer in just nine posts and within a couple of hours. At any IT forum, this would have taken days or weeks to resolve. Thanks and God bless you.

FYI, I was able to set up my home computer as a server (so I could serve the compiled Applet). SketchMD, I know, I said I accepted your interpretation; but somehow I do not. I will attempt to put a Java Applet into a FreeRepublic Post shortly. I will let you know if it worked or not. If you don't care to know, let me know.

Well I tried. See post #16. The FreeRepublic system stripped it right out. Preview even shows it stripped. I do not think it is after Applet's per say, I've embedded other html tags in this message like [body bgcolor="#000000"] [/body] and it strips them as well. I had to use [ brackets because < brackets would have stripped the "body" stuff from this message.

Its probably just as well because to use Java Applets on the client side, first they have to download a 15MB plug-in for their browser (requiring a reboot), then if they are using XP SP2 it is stopped and they would have to go to the bar thing click it and say let it in. Once they did that another pop-up comes up to warn them not to do it. I don't think very many people would do that.

Sun sure spent alot of money developing something of little use.

I wish I had some sauce to put on this crow.

lol. Security, my friend. FR would be liable if your java applet did something to someone's system.
