On 8 May 2001, the Government announced a new direction for the NZDF. For the Navy, the key components are a joint-Service approach and a practical naval fleet matched to NZ’s wider security needs. The Government stated that the two ANZAC frigates will continue in service and work will proceed on identifying a suitable multi-role vessel, with long distance and Southern Ocean capabilities, to be phased in as HMNZS CANTERBURY is retired. At the same time, a study will be conducted into additional hulls to best meet civil requirements for coastal and mid-range off-shore capabilities. Consideration will also be given to whether any further combat and detection equipment should be provided for the 5 new Seasprite helicopters now entering service.

On the RNZN website above they post little factoids on the bottom titled "Did you know?", this one is a classic.

"Over 4000 standard torch batteries are used every year in the portable equipment on RNZN ships.."
