Take a look at that free middle connect that hooks to the hard drive...feel along both top and bottom of the connected , one side will have a raised marker of notch.... if you look at the CD plug area you will see that there will be a notch in the metal box that surrounds the pins.....that marker on the cable connector is to go into the notched area on the drive.
Be careful , gets your eyes close... so that the plug fits over the pins correctly before you apply the necessary pressure to set the plug.... you should do that rather than your husband as you would likely have the more sensitive touch and can feel resistance if the pins aren't lined up correctly!
