I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

And thanks for some of your advice, even though there was one post I *really* didn't understand at all! Way over my head.

you should register a complaint...with either MS or Norton...
check the logs though.
You are a Geeky Gramma...ROFL!!
Frankly with what we put you thru tonight and a bit more work and study you should look into building your own...
Are your eyes good enough you can see the pin on the motherboard?...that is where I have trouble....

"You know, you're right; I ran Norton Ingegrator, Restore, the whole thing. It SHOULD have worked."
Howlin, get yourself a imaging program like DriveImage, now owned by Symantec or TrueImage by Acronis, they will save you enormous problems and are far superior than xp's restore. Most important is that they bypass xp completely whereas system restore does not.

One of the things you learn in repairing computers, is patient repetitions. you have to fix it, but you also need to know what caused it.
Finding the cause is a product of how you fix.
You done good. You are up and running.

Might need to get an addition hard drive...call us , that will be a simple install after all of this effort....check NEWEGG for prices or outpost.com (FREYS online ), they seem to have connections as they are always running specials with rebates....I have an abundance of hard drives from Freys, 4 or 5 250 gigs, couple of 160 gigs, 3 or 4 120 gigs,.and they have a nice special with rebate on an 80 gig for Hitachi ..$60 with rebate $25. cost at $ 34.99 after the rebate....

I agree, 2nd hd for backup is a must. Newegg, best on the net for prices, delivery time and servides. I've dealt with them for over 4 years, several purchases without a hitch.

What I want is so more RAM. I'm happy with everything else; just want some more SPEED.
I've got 35 hours of music on here and it hasn't even touched it.

What are you guys suggesting? A second hard drive? Won't CDRWs work? Would a zip drive do just as well?

LOL, hell no. I meant it was fun helping you solve the problem, but you probably have a headache right about now. ;-)

Before I signed off, I took the liberty to check on that fix you used.
I was incorrect in my SP-2 assumtion. The fix is used to replace the device driver. That is all it does, so your driver was corrupted.
i don't know why a driver roll back or the reinstalls did not work?????
The drivers normally replace.
It remains a mystery to me.
