I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005

Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin

I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.

I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

"My husband wondered if it might have been laying against the green "dome" thing on the left side somehow."

Ok so you never opened it so I doubt the cable was corrupted. The green dome is just a fan duct to vent air away from the cpu, it wouldn't damage it.

Thinking...

Looks like her cds are nicely exposed.

she could run the test with the box open.

Maybe we should see if she can do that, that would certainly reduce the work out.....might need to put something under the edges....

the end connectors on the IDE ribbon cables will have a raised bit that lines up with a notch on the drives and on the MB, so you can't get the orientation on the cables wrong. Is that what you're talking about? If not... never mind...

I'm pretty sure that there's a "case open" switch that will prevent it from booting while open. OSHA, don't ya know.

That is not my actual CPU, but it looks like it; the top CD is the regular CD rom; the one right under it is the CD writer; and right under that is the A drive.

BTW, the top CD is the one I put the Billy Joel thing in last night, if that makes any difference.

From my experience. Most PC's don't care if only a slave is connected. I have only seen one that did. And the manufacturer admitted it was a bug in the chipset.

I can't recall either, but I think if you disconnect one, the other defauts to master regardles of the jumper. I do recall running a CD set to slave on a couple systems, but I cannot be sure it will work.

I have been using the NVidia NForce Chipsets as of late for AMD. They seem to work a lot better for me.

yea probably right. Scartch the idea of running with the case open, she can make the big guy do the heavy lifting, that would help!

A slave will always be a slave. But the bios, The Chipset, And windows does not care. It will run it just the same even if no master is connected. As long as it is not the boot Hard drive. Some newer PC's will even boot from a Slaved Hard drive if you tell the bios to do it. Just from my recent experience.

I never see fancy computers with that sort of protections.

I have worked a few, but most will allow backwards hookups.

I unfortunately discovered it the hard way, so I asummed the worst case.

Earlier I mentioned that my mothers car would not shut off. It turned out the car starter that never worked suddenly decided that it was going to keep the ignition on. I had to pull the fuse out of it... Never seen that one before.

Lets have her disconnect the drive at the middle of the cable first ,... followed by reconnecting it/

Close case power on and see......

and disconnecting the drive at the end of the cable

Close case power on and see......

followed by disconnecting and reconnecting the motherboard IDE connection .....

Close case power on and see......

And if none of that works.....?????

I just don't get it; everything else is peachy fine; every time I uninstall them in Device Manager, as soon as I reboot, it finds them, tries to install them, and then nada.

I got green flashing lights, lots of bells and whistles, and I can't see them.

If they don't "appear" with a restore from a month ago on a date that I know I burned CDs, what is it telling me?

I'm very late to this thread, but have you tried a "Restore Point" from a few days ago?

Yeah, that confirms what I thought. I rarely pay a lot of attention to it, and I never have had a failure.

When someone brings me one, I am usually taking the factory cabling out and changing the mother and memory. Then when I hook up I have new cables without safeties and I am real cautious of the orientations.
