I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Hell....we could have a fund raising drive....I have some ping lists.....I'll match that 10$ offer.......
On a thread the other night someone said FR had 174,000 people registered.....
If half gave $10 she could buy her own small supercomputer....

Yeah, the "resistive connection" type failure is possible, but the concidence with running an unknown CD is too much for me.
There was a copy protection scheme introduced in early 2004 (not picked up by major CD manufactures due to the screams in the computer and consumer advocate communities) that would cause damage on some CD burners if you even played the CD in the drive, let alone tried to copy one. It forced a seek to an invalid track. Most CD players would simply refuse to go there, but a big chunk of CD burners will try going to even invalid tracks. It's tied to the "overburn" capabilities of some drives. That's why I avoid overburning. It's also why I almost never put a CD into my burner unless it's a blank I'm going to burn to.

What I hope to do, if Howlin gets the case open......lol
Is to isolate the individual drived from each other if the cable thing does not do the trick. I doubt both are screwed up, but they are likely master/slave daisy chained. One would possibly get the other.

We could set up a Pay-Pal and see if she likes the idea?

Is there any kind of a tutorial document on this problem that we could post here on FR?

Is there any kind of a tutorial document on this problem that we could post here on FR? The nasty copy protection thing? If that's what you mean I'll have to go back and dig the info back out. It was at least a year ago and, as I said, it was not being widely adopted after big howls from consumer activists and folks like the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation).
I'll do some archeological research (this is ancient history in computers).

When the CD was removed, it, (the gizmo) should have returned to its dock.
I dunno.?????? It may be just Murphy's law.
