I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Region 1 is US and if not properly designated, it will cause problems.
HOWLIN, PLEASE SEE #177, before tinkering with all manner of things. It may be a simple solution if another Region was chosen.

That region stuff is built into all DVD's which is not what Howlin has. It determines what country your DVD's have to be from to play. They don't want you buying CD's in another country to play here...LOL. Most DVD burners will let you change this setting a few times. (Usually 4 times). After that you are stuck with your last setting.

Which is why I don't think it's hardware, unless the controller died or something happened to the ide cable, which is a lot less likly than a software problem.

She has both drives down, I doubt both would be corrupted in the same way.
I just checked my CDR and I do not have that, but I do not have a Dell.

Just did the reboot with the installation CD in BOTH drives.
No go.
I have had service pak 2 for a long time; it's not that.
The ONLY thing I have done to this computer within the last few days is remove Sony Sound Forge 7.0.

Correction...Not just burners, but players too. I don't think this has anything to with Howlins Problem. Just does not make sense that it would.

Ready to open up, or do you want to try the safe mode restore sys operation?

Also, when you did your update at MS, what updates did you select and were any of them drivers?

"Any idea what might have caused the problem....a bad update from MS????"
Doubtful update is to blame.
When I reinstalled Windows (not a repair install but a FRESH, COMPLETE install) the problem fixed itself. Absolute drive rerecognition was apparent immediately subsequent to reinstall.
Not a terrible inconvenience to reinstall considering I use the computer almost exclusively for FR and email (had no data to backup, which was fortunate).

I am just about ready to open it up, but you guys have to tell me exactly HOW to do it.......I mean, pull it all the way out, just mash it in, what?
PRECISELY, please.
(BTW, I love you all!)
