Go here for the document:

Code 19...CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP

Not sure if this fits our problem.....

How about trying a System Restore again since you've made some changes?

Always worth a shot.

I can also send you a medium sized hammer:-)

Before we do much with messing with the registry we need to make sure we can rebuild the system...however, if it really is hardware...that won't help...

Nope.

Plug and play can be so aggravating, as it often misleads even the best trouble shooter.

Dell's Community Support Forum is very good and has bailed me out of a few jams more than once. It pointed me to the link to the Windows Code 19 problem that everyone found about the same time. Now I'm out of suggestions & stumped. Cold boots CAN work wonders sometimes though...but hammers can too :)

Yes, but I have it set to let me decide when the install them.

In fact, I went there last night and tried to install them and gave up.

Try this one more time.

Go back into the system page on the control panel and delete the drives again. Then rather than use reboot, go to the hardware installation gizmo and run it manually. See what it comes up with, just for clarity so that if it is still screwed up, you have something solid to tell a repair tech.

That is all I got left, except to open her up.

By cold boot, do you mean turn it off and then wait a few minutes before restarting?

If so, I have done that twice.

My hubby (the 'puter geek) is unavailable right now. If you haven't resolved it in a bit, I'll ask him to read this thread.

Was this before or after you were using the CD for playing the Music CD?

Yep...that's a cold boot. How about unplugging it for a couple of minutes then reboot. At this point try everything!

You might consider going for the Windows XP repair option. You insert your XP disk, reboot and repair your installation. You should back up your emails and favorites. It's hard to explain where both are located

FWIW.... http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

I think you need some local geek help or you might end up with a real mess. Losing stuff you don't want to lose. AKA hosing your system
