I love those Praying Mantis. They are the good guys eating those pests. You gave me an idea. I should put the egg sacks in a planter on our deck. Do you recall the time of year that was? I'm going to try it this year. We had one that lived in our window box for a while. I loved looking out our window and checking on him!

I find it fascinating when I see the Crows and Blue Jays try to force out a Hawk. When I first saw it I had no idea what the heck they were doing.
You have a huge variety of birds in your area. I'm planting for the birds too. Like you I'm enjoying seeing more and more birds come from my planting. This year more of my plants should be mature enough to produce more berries for them. I can't wait till spring!

I have a tremendous compost hole in the corner ready for my tomatoes, okras, cucumbers, bell peppers... I took a look at my frozen pond and see only one fish went belly up woo hoo!

Your so lucky you went to a garden show. I'd love to go a garden show. I had never seen Nandina. I looked it up and that's a great choice! I love the idea of leaving room for annuals in between. I agree, annuals are terrific for long season colors. Each year I use them more and more. I hope this thread is going on long enough for pictures of your plantings. :)

"I took a look at my frozen pond and see only one fish went belly up" Wow. I would think up there that an outdoor pond with fish in it would be a bit risky.

It's deep, about four feet. They go under the leaves I was too lazy to scrap out and fishsleep. I put a hole in the ice today and lots of gas from rotting leaves and fishpoop I suppose.

I really like the Nandina also. They change colors with the season but keep their leafs all year. Now that I know what they are I see them everywhere:). I even checked today at wal-mart and they had them. The tag on them at walmart tho, said plant in shade. They won't be in the shade where I wanted to plant them. But I noticed all the ones I saw today, were where they would get sun, then on the internet it said they could take the sun....I'm confused why that tag said that, but I'm going to go ahead and try them. They were like $5.44 a piece, so that's not too bad. I want 8 of them.

WEll...I don't like them:), that's one reason I'd like a little more light out there. They are suppose to be good to have around. They eat alot of other bugs. My dog loves to play with them when she finds one. I've been waiting for one to bite her, so far she's been lucky.
If I found them more often then I do, I might do something, but last year I only had 3-4.

I have a new bird around the past couple of days. Not sure what it is. I think it's some kind of wren, but I'm not sure. It's a 2-tone brown, small, kinda roundish with a black mask and a long beak.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh LOL
I'd be a nervous wreck. You are so brave! I don't know if I could even take a picture!
I hate when I find tags and one says sun and another say shade. It happens a lot. Then I can't understand what part sun - part shade difference is. Sometimes I just end up hoping for the best. If your finding Nandina, I should look this year. They stay fairly small?

A black mask. Sounds like an interesting bird. Maybe some sort of Warbler? I love seeing new birds.
SweetLiberty, I'm curious, what photo software do you use? I'm trying to find one that can zoom into a subject. Thanks.

From what I've read, they can get 18 inches to 3 ft tall, but can be pruned all you want, and they stay fairly compact. I like them mostly because of the red color they turn. They will give my garden some color in the winter. It needs it bad. I have nothing out there in the wnter now. Pretty drab.

I thought Warbler at first, but they don't have the beak.
Software for what?

Could it be some type of chickadee.

Never mind. I guess I didn't read it right. I use Paint Shop Pro. It's an older version (7), but I never have learned to use all the features, so I guess it doesn't matter.
