I was about to reply that filing criminal charges against a 12 year old was a big overreach until I read this in the article:
"When the 13-year-old girl refused to give up the microwavable pie, her brother drew a nine-inch folding knife and attacked, Covarrubias said."
That is series and I hope they take a hard look at the parents, too. What the heck is the kid doing packing a knife like that?

Maybe the entire knife was nine inches if you include the handle. Since it was a folding knife the blade was probably more like four inches.
