I, an Italian woman living in Rome, chanced upon the Democratic Underground forum. And was banned for being a "disruptive Freep" for the sin of suggesting to an American Indian forummer that people born after genocides shouldn't be blamed. I came to that conclusion, having been married to a German who was constantly being treated like a murderous Nazi, despite the fact that he was born in 1955.

But never mind such outlandish logic. The problem was I didn't know what a Freep was. Well, after searching around, I discovered the Freeps are you!

Politically, I don't know how I would stand in America, probably a libertarian, maybe even a little left of center. Today those kind of labels are very complicated, especially when discussing politics with Americans who have other points of reference.

Is it a such a sin in America to suggest to an Indian to bury the hatchet?

I cannot believe what happened to the Democrats of the USA. I was not even kicked out so fast from Salafi Islamist sites telling the Imams to be nicer to women! Your anti-freep blog brothers are even faster and more draconian than Allah!

Why should my "bis nonno," my great grandfater be blamed for handing out blankets with smallpox to the Apastroke Indians? He was in Piedmont milking goats! Why should I carry the weight of the Trail of Tears?

These people you say are crazy, ARE crazy. Unhappily crazy. Okay, I'm sorry for Custer, but then I want the Indian to apologize for Attila the Hun!

Well, now though I'm trying to get back in, because these people need evangelization of rationality more than the ancient Irish needed St. Patrick, let me thank you for being freeps.

But I don't even know your site yet, maybe I'm hasty and you are the reverse reflection. If I say I don't like Coca Cola and I don't like the orange hair of Ronald MacDonald, maybe you will ban me for being a DU disrupter?

The DUer's general ideology is that it's always somebody else's fault for [fill in the blank].
Barring a handy live scapegoat, they'll dig up a few hundred dead ones to cheerfully flog.
"Personal responsibility" is an alien concept to them.
Now quit going to that disgusting place...it's full of nasty humours and myriad maleficent miasmas...:)

No, what they need is to have electrified fences placed around their mental wards, and perhaps you need some medication for thinking you can change the deranged.

Welcome to the Free Republic.

Hello!

Welcome!

Yes, Democratic Underground is a sick, sad place.

We have our share of crazies here on Free Republic, but they will usually at least start out being polite.

I'd like to tell you, of Woman of Rome, that we here in America say, "Thank You!" for the help your soldiers having given us in Iraq.

Italy is our true and steadfast friend.

I'm not particularly fond of McDonald's either.

This is a forum for the promotion of conservatism but you're welcome here as far as I am concerned.

Good luck on trying to evangelize over at DU- I've found them to be a lost cause, though. For entertainment- and more on DU- you can try inserting "DU" or "democratunderground" into this website's search engine.

Don't be too shocked at what you find here. There's a wide range of opinion, even a few stray liberals.

Most likely if this keeps up:-) Read and lurk for awhile. Vanities from newbies are discouraged.

Welcome to Free Republic. To give you some idea of the political parameters here, Silvio Berlusconi is considered one of the good guys. Fabrizio Quattrocchi is considered a martyr, now resting with the saints. Orianna Fallaci gets the occasional marriage proposal here.

Romano Prodi is considered a fool, the Olive Tree Coalition considered worthless, Brussels a nightmare and the Euro a disaster.

Regards, Ivan

Welcome to FR.

I was not even kicked out so fast from Salafi Islamist sites telling the Imams to be nicer to women!

My only advice is that you are trying to apply logic where none exists(or wanted). Opposing viewpoints are welcome here. Just remember that this is Mr. Robinson's "house". If you treat it with respect even liberals are welcome here (see MurryMom)

The American Indian question here isn't as cut and dried as all that. Many Americans have Native American blood (mine from fifth and sixth Cherokee great-grandmothers), but many do not even know about their ancestors all that well. Most of us just know we are mostly mixed blood here in America. . German, Italian, English, French, Scots, Scots/Irish, Native American, African-American, etc.

Welcome to FR, if you can survive the Viking Zot Kitties. (Once cute kittens turned into Cute Viking Zot Kitties.)
The next hurdle is all the disagreeing posters. One must be able to take disagreement on FR.

The Free Republic is NOT the mirror image of the Democratic Underground. There's a rather wide range of opinions, political colors here.

I came here via the Democratic Underground also. A coworker asked me to look at that website during the run up to the election. The very first thread really set me back - the hate, complete lack of logic, etc. It did mention Freepers, so I was curious and found this site.

As to rationality at DU - won't happen. :-)

"These people you say are crazy, ARE crazy. Unhappily crazy. Okay, I'm sorry for Custer, but then I want the Indian to apologize for Attila the Hun! "

I like that! I’m giving this to you as straight as I can.

Free Republic (FR) is many times larger than DU, big enough to contain evolving sub-communities. Some people here read little beyond what interests them, such as technology, law or whatever. Many avoid arguments, have developed warm friendships and will tell you that FR is much more tolerant than DU. It’s not always true.

To feel comfortable for long, you’ll need to have some right, conservative or right leaning libertarian opinions. IMO, it’s not the “best face” of the American right because many people are very undiplomatic. You can express a fair about of dissent on most subjects, but you’ll often be challenged and expected to give a reason behind opposing positions. Depending on how emotional the issue, you probably won’t get the last word no matter how well developed your argument. Some people here (as everywhere) won’t respond to that, and when you get enough of them together on one thread, they can become a mob.

FR has thousands of very real experts, not just ideologues, on hundreds of subjects, but it also has more than its share of agenda-driven crack-pot nut-cases (like me). It’s the nature of online forums, attracting them like magnets. If you can tolerate that, I think it’s one of the most stimulating, fascinating dynamic places you'll ever find with your clothes on.

FRegards,
Bill

Yes. That phrase is considered offensive by many Native Americans.

What you might want to suggest instead is to have powwow and smokum peace-pipe.
