Just my stock reply to a cryptic post...

"They were talking about FReepers yesterday." It was near the end of the show when Sean was interviewing Mark about his new book. Sean said something about what the FReepers call Mark.

What we need are some actual Chinese ZIP codes, then we could cross-reference them with knife usage and see if there is a pattern for certian regions that have more touch with the Western world (like Hong Kong, Beijing, etc).Brilliant idea. You must be in statistical analysis by trade. Maybe our FRiend azhenfud would be able to help us.
Mr. Azhenfud, would you, by chance, have access to Chinese ZIP Codes or their equivalent, or do they just have one ZIP Code, like they have just one time zone? Have you noticed regional disparity among the Chinese in regards to those who supply a full complement of Western cutlery v. those who make their patrons ask?

I stayed at this hotel the last time I was in Beijing - a month ago - in the pic, I was on the left wing, 12th floor on the back corner. Yes, as you can see from the address, they do have zip codes. They might just have the zips there for looks, though.

I got the breakfast buffet there and didn't have to ask for any cutlery. Man! they have a MEAN hamburger they call a "Star Burger". The bun's in a star shape with a half pound of something like ground beef and a pound of taters...;-)

Well, I have noticed if you risk a visit to restaurants Westerners don't frequent, you won't get a knife - nor a fork...;-) (but what you will most likely get is questionable service).

Thank you for your enlightening reply. I wonder why the Chinese have six digit ZIP Codes? I bet its so they can feel superior to us! And do you really trust them to use beef in their "hamburgers"? I feel its dangerous enough to try the General Tso's Chicken, which I usually examine bite-by-bite as I enjoy it.

Considering China is as large as it is and so populous, I'd guess that's the reason for so many digits.
There's a restaurant in Guangzhou that almost every Westerner going to Shamian island visits - it's "Lucy's". They serve good burgers, chicken, and steaks with all the regular Western sides - so it's not too difficult to get a good "hanbaobao". (Just close yer eyes and bite)
There are also restaurants of the local fare and their Chinese food is authentic. Whew! watch out for anything with "lai" in its name. It'll grill your gizzard.

I used to live in Yokohama, which has one of the largest ethnic Chinese populations outside of mainland China, and from what I saw in the front windows of the restaurants, I want nothing to do with
authentic Chinese "cuisine."
"Yes, please roast whatever is crawling around on the floor and serve it with some of the weeds growing along the sidewalk. And I'll have that with the rice that isn't moving!"
I'll stick with Sweet 'n' Sour and General Tso's Chicken!

Just something I've come to learn- Chinese people, or Asians in general, don't like being called "zips". I think "slant eyed devil" is the P.C. term nowadays.

I want nothing to do with authentic Chinese "cuisine."My Chinese guide told me, "Chinese eat anything with four legs - except the table, and anything with wings and a tail - but an airplane."

I think "slant eyed devil" is the P.C. term nowadays.Azhenfud was referring to zip codes, not to a slang term for people of Asian descent. Also, the s.e.d. term is not currently en vogue - the term I'm trying to popularize, at least among my brethren in the higher ed field, is "academically-superior non-recipient of federal funding or institutional preferences." I know its rather long and unyieldy, but I try to be as precise and concise as possible. Also, after many years of study, I can testify that Asians' eyes are not slanted - they are as perpindicular to the general vertical line of the face as we honkies (unless you're discussing Farrah Fawcett, Burt Reynolds, and other victims of plastic surgery). But that still doesn't explain the knife thing...

Did you guys know some Asians refer to us honkies, or bairen, as "white devils"? It was a loooong time after first being called a WASP that I was finally told "you're a White, Anglo-Saxon Person".
