Scipio Aemilianus (full name Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus Africanus Minor) was the Roman commander who captured and destroyed Carthage in 146 B.C. By birth he was a son of Lucius Aemilius Paullus, who won the battle of Pydna in 168 B.C. and ended the kingdom of Macedonia. He was adopted by a son of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (the general who beat Hannibal at the battle of Zama in 202 B.C.).

Scipio Aemilianus was the brother-in-law of Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, the famous tribunes. He was fighting a war in Spain when Tiberius Gracchus was murdered but expressed his approval of his death...so when Aemilianus was found dead a few years later some people suspected he had been murdered. Both his wife and his mother-in-law (the sister of his adoptive father) were suspected of killing him. Possibly he just died in his sleep of natural causes.
