Fox to Debut 'American Dad' from 'Family Guy' Creator
Newsday ^

AMERICAN DAD. From the creator of "Family Guy," a new animated comedy on Fox that's reminiscent of, well, "Family Guy." Sneak preview Sunday after the Super Bowl (approximately 10:30 p.m.) on WNYW/5.

The Fox programmers apparently assume that all of America's impressionable tykes and easily scandalized adults will be snugly in their beds by the time 10:30 rolls around Sunday night. That's the only explanation I can think of for their using the Super Bowl as a launchpad for "American Dad," a new cartoon series that's getting a sneak preview after the game and a special, football-oriented episode of "The Simpsons."

Fox and the NFL are so anxious about being party to another day of infamy like last year's that they've turned the halftime entertainment chores over to former Beatle Paul McCartney, whose song selection for the occasion is more likely to include "Silly Love Songs" than "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" Yet Fox is subsequently broadcasting a half-hour show that makes Janet Jackson's millisecond of breast exposure seem as innocent as a "Barney" song-and-dance number.

How vulgar is "American Dad"? Let me enumerate a few of the ways.

I can't believe Fox would insult "The Simpsons" - its greatest contribution to popular culture and satirical art - by pairing it with a show that doesn't have a third of its wit or originality.

The Simpsons is no longer deserving of respect. The current batch of writers (and there have been many batches of writers over the years) are unfunny, squishy liberal hacks who are merely living off the good reputtaion that the show has made for itself over the years.

"Worst writers ever."

I don't think it's been funny since Phil Hartman was killed.

Try watching it! Funniest damn show out there even in re-runs it blows Simpsons out of the water.

Actually I think they went through a phase they weren't as funny but it's gotten better over the past year. Wouldn't say they're liberal either. Just willing to lampoon about anything and everything. For example, after reading the synopsis on the episode after the Super Bowl this weekend, that one may be pretty funny

Family Guy is a staple at college. Personally, I think it's a great show, but that's just me.

The Simpsons, unfortunately, is in a sustained decline. I held out hope that they would make it to 20 seasons and then call it quits, but I don't know if it's got enough gas in the tank. The episodes have been hit or miss lately. I prefer watching the older episodes from the mid to late 90s when the show was in its prime.

Peter Griffin seems to me like an over-the-top homo.

I like Brian the dog and Stewie the baby.

I am a Family Guy fan but Seth Macfarlane is clearly a bozo.
Here is why - from Wikepedqa:

American Dad is MacFarlane's latest undertaking and will air in early 2005. It will focus on Stan Smith, a CIA agent convinced that terrorists are everywhere, even in his own household. He has a loving wife and two children, along with two unusual houseguests. Roger, the Alien who Stan rescued from Area 51, and Klaus the goldfish with the brain of a German man implanted into him.

MacFarlane has said that his discontent towards George W. Bush's presidency was a motivating factor in the development and plot of the show.

September 11, 2001 experience

On September 11, 2001 MacFarlane was scheduled to return to Los Angeles on American Airlines Flight 11 after being a keynote speaker at his alma-mater in Rhode Island. His travel agent gave him the wrong flight time, and he arrived at Boston Logan Airport a few minutes after boarding was finished. He was told he would have to wait for the next flight. At 8:45am one hour after the departure of American Airlines Flight 11, it was hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

In an interview in USA Today a few days after the attacks he said that he was unable to get in touch with his office or his family in Los Angeles. He ended up driving half way across the country before he finally was able to get his office and his parents to tell them that he was all right.
