Journey had an awesome sound. A great combination of players...period.
The group UFO also had Awesome clasical gutair:
"Try Me"
"Proffesion of violence"
And "Lady Starlight" by Scorpions has gutair playing that sends chills down my spine.
Umm, Neil Young was quite well known for instrumentalist tracks. The shocker is that he's #86 while hs own frickin' band mate is in the 30s.
But in much smaller font size.
But, then again. YOu're right.
THIS LIST IS CRAP!
My list, reflecting talent and influence:
1. Eddie Van Halen
2. Slash
3. David Gilmour
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Dick Dale
6. Joe Satriani
7. Eric Clapton
8. Carlos Santana
9. Steve Vai
10. Jimmy Page
Also, hats off to The Edge, Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler, John Noren (Dokken), Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees), Prince (Yes, the artist formally known as!), Steve Howe (Yes), Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Neil Young, Vernon Reid (Living Color), Steve Gaines (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Jennifer Batten (the one playing MOST of the guitar work that people THINK Van Halen played on "Beat It."), and Brian Setzer.
Odd note to self: lots of guys named "Steve." One guy even named Steve twice. (Steve Stevens.)
No mention yet of Pat Metheny?!? Sad.
Oh, I agree. Thanks, I knew someone was being left off my list.
I'm going to see him March 13, can't wait, the new album is great.
Holy toledo - I left Robert Fripp off my list!
Consider what I've said about Johnny Ramone:
He is to guitar chops what Nietszche is to philosophy.
(Yeah, I know. 2 demerits for using Nietszche and the Ramones in the same concept.)
Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen, are a must on my list.
This list is nearly 2 yrs old and was on FR for months.
You may be right, but I'm willing to give him a pass for being influental on a huge scale. The Ramones July 4, 1976 concert in England kickstarted punk rock in the UK. And if chops are the only criteria, then it's Les Paul and only Les Paul on my list!
Wasn't there a poll/thread just like this 6(?) months ago?
I wasn't meaning to dismiss Johnny. I think many philosophy professors would list Nietszche as a great philosopher, and he is too readily dismissed as a characature of what he actually meant to say. Just as Nietzche reminded philosophers of the limits of rationalism, Johnny Ramone reminded musicians what rock'n'roll is supposed to be about. That's no faint praise!
It is merely meant as an explanation for why it is easy to dismiss Johnny.
Lita Ford would kick Liz Phair's ass.
