Any Freepers in Modoc County CA

My wife and I are wondering about what Modoc County CA is like.
Looking at the presidential election results on the county by county map it is the "reddest" county in CA.
Weather, people, treatment of new-comers, government, etc

Driven through a few times. .....probably the most isolated (from population centers) area of the state. Weather is far more extreme than the coastal areas, of course.

that is in the boonies above Lassen county and east of Shasta on the border of Oregon........It is basically living in the rugged mountains with forest terrain and not very close to any big cities except for in Oregon I believe. It is a very out of the way place, pretty and a good retirement type place if you want a county like simple life.......

One of the most isolated areas of the nation, in fact.

better question is any body in Modoc? - Prob the least population density in California and it is way way up there...closer to Idaho in political sensibilities I suspect...

From CCC you are close enough to visit it on a three or four day weekend. That's what I did. Take a trip! Have fun!

Here's notes of what I remember :
Much of it looks like "Bonanza"
Alturas is a rodeo town.
NW Calif has many wildlife refuges (think marshes, birds, and bugs)
It's conservative ( I remember seing Dole bumper stickers there)
It has a higher percentage of Mormons than average I think.
Goose Lake is not a lake of water - it's 100% mud

Do a picture search for "Alturas" or "Modoc" etc and you can see some pictures on line. There are a few I just found at http://www.myeranch.com/california/modoclots.html

Be sure to check out Susanville and especially the towns around Lake Almanor while you're there. There are lots of photos of Lake Almanor online too. You'll probably want to retire there ASAP!

Good luck!

Here's a little snapshot of the area around Modoc County.

Everything you say is true. I'm trying to convince the wife to move from Redding to Susanville but she just wants to be closer to "mall shopping". nActually, I said janesville, but that was definitely out of the question...LOL!!

I love Susanville. It has 4 seasons. And it's close to Reno so the air races in September are just down the road.

Are you a pilot? If so, do you fly into Susanville?

I flew half way to Susanville from Hat Creek once. ;-)

I highly recommend the Canby Hotel in Modoc as a watering-hole and feed station. It has been a road-trip haven for me over the years. Friendly folks - the best of backwater America !

You can sleep there, too. ;^)
