Family Reacts To Pregnant Teen's Murder

A pregnant teenager is dead after being beaten with a baseball bat. The suspect in her murder is a man who her family believes was the baby's father.

9 News' Nancy Yamada has more on this horrific crime and the family, devastated by the loss of 17-year old Cheri Washington.

Cheri Washington was five months pregnant when she went to a home on the 14000 block of Dixon Street, Thursday morning.

Inside, police say she got into an argument with 26-year old Carlos Williams who now stands accused of brutally beating her with his fists and a baseball bat.

"We have no idea why he would do that", says Cheri's older sister, Natasha.

"We're devastated by what happened. We're just trying to cope with everything; we're leaning on each other", says Natasha.

According to police, after the beating, Cheri remained inside Williams' home for almost 5 hours. She managed to get out shortly before two o'clock.

"A neighbor spotted her and realized she needed help, picked her up and took her home. When she got home her mother immediately called an ambulance; she was taken to Potomac hospital for her injuries and as a result, she died this morning", says Detective Dennis Mangan with the Prince William County Police Department.

But not before telling detectives what happened and who was responsible.

Natasha suspects Williams didn't want the baby.

"He could've just not wanted it. He wasn't asking for anything. He could have just walked away", she says.

Instead, two lives are gone. Natasha lost a chance to be an aunt and to watch Cheri become a mother.

"She was a wonderful person and she's my only sister, my baby sister. We grew up together", she says.

Washington was a senior at Hylton High School. As for Williams, for now he's charged with aggravated malicious wounding.

But the Commonwealth's Attorney could charge him with murder for the death of Washington and her unborn child.

Rest in peace.

I guess baseball bat abortions are the latest craze.

This is a very sad thing to have happened to someone.
However it does raise a question.
What is a 17 year old doing with a 26 year old in the first place?

Lack of parental involvement would be my guess. As a father of a 16 year old girl, I can't see how a parent would allow it.

First, may Cheri Washington rest in peace, along with her unborn child.

Personal ownership of baseball bats should be banned;
all bats should be registered to specific owners;
bats should be locked so unsupervised children and adolescents cannot have access to them;
Ceasefire America's name should be changed to Batcease America
