I think there are chemiclal that are hard to trace, but do not know which. As for the tree huggers 0200 hours on a Monday morning, quick in and out.

If nothing else, get a post maul and a large rail stake and knock the stake into the base of the tree late at night. The tree will slowly die off. Then it won't be worth keeping.
