Some gays yearn for infection

Bug chasers and gift givers probably can't hurt you. But they're trying to kill each other.

You've probably heard of neither. And you probably couldn't fathom their taste in an astoundingly risky sexual behavior.

Bug chasers are HIV-negative gay men hoping to contract the virus. Gift givers are HIV-positive homosexuals who enjoy obliging bug chasers.

It's no urban myth. They're real - and they're here.

You might think such a thing possible in San Francisco and New York. But bug chasers and gift givers practice their lethal thrill-seeking locally.

"We have bathhouses in Chicago and we have adult bookstores in Peoria. There are people in these places searching for infection," says Alan Grebner, president of the board of directors of the John Keets Foundation.

The Canton-based AIDS-awareness group announced earlier this month that it soon will disband. They've had an increasingly tough time soliciting help and funds.

Still, Grebner and other members plan to keep speaking out about AIDS and HIV. One of Grebner's pet peeves is the commonplace - yet erroneous - belief among young gays that newer drugs practically halt the threat of HIV.

"People (say), 'Oh, goody. We have a cure,' " Grebner says.

Grebner, 38, knows first-hand that the treatments aren't foolproof. HIV-positive himself, the licensed therapist has grown too sick to work. His liver and spleen have severely swelled under his regimen of drugs.

"They're toxic," he says. "It's not a pleasant thing."

Yet to some gays, slick pharmaceutical ads suggest HIV is easily controllable. That mindset has helped spark a surge of bug chasers and gift givers.

But there are other, insidious reasons behind the phenomenon, as explained two years ago in an extensive piece in Rolling Stone magazine.

Rather than fear the virus, bug chasers take control of their fate and welcome HIV. Other gays feel lost, bereft of community, and think HIV will give them a sense of brotherhood among other positives.

And some bug chasers just see the thrill of the hunt of the most extreme sex possible. One told Rolling Stone that contracting HIV would be "the most erotic thing I can imagine."

Meanwhile, gift givers are happy to expand their ranks. To Rolling Stone, one gay man explained the fun of infecting a partner: "I'm murdering him in a sense, killing him slowly, and that's ... exciting to me."

Web sites and chat rooms help these seekers find each other. To a small extent, that might be happening in Peoria, Grebner says.

"I bet some of it's going on online, because people are hooking up (unprotected) all the time," he says. "It's rampant."

But in Peoria, the quest is quieter, with little of the brazen flamboyance of big cities.

"They're not going to say (in Peoria) at 2 a.m., 'Hey, I'm looking for a bug chaser,' " Grebner says.

How prevalent is this dicey pursuit? Nationally, Rolling Stone blamed 10,000 new infections a year on bug chasing. Gay advocates later criticized that number as too high, calling bug chasers a small fringe element among homosexuals.

Grebner says he's unsure of the numbers in Peoria: "It's such a small percentage of the gay community."

He pauses, then adds, "It's gotta be, I hope."

Homosexuals Should Pay More Insurance

January 20, 2005

by Nathan Tabor

With the big flap over so-called “gay marriage” temporarily on the back burner — now that their fearless but feckless leader John Kerry has gone down in flames, and with the first government-sanctioned same-sex unions already ending nastily in divorce courts and bitter custody battles — this just might be an opportune moment to discuss some rarely mentioned health problems inherent within the allegedly avant garde homosexual lifestyle.

Some would say it is a known fact that most homosexuals, and especially gay men, are promiscuous. Their rhetoric is carefully crafted to give the impression they are in “committed, caring relationships” while research suggests that the vast majority of gays are neither celibate nor monogamous. (All heterosexuals are not celibate or monogamous either.)

Some may say, so what? Well, the corollary to this homosexual health hypothesis is another proven fact: most sexually active homosexuals simply don’t live a very long time. The heartier they party, it seems, the shorter the time that party lasts.

According to a article entitled “ The Longevity of Homosexuals” in the Omega Journal of Death and Dying, the median age of death from AIDS for homosexual men is 37, and the median age of death from other causes is 42. This does not compare favorably to the ever-increasing average lifespan of the rest of the heterosexual American population.

An analysis conducted at the end of 1997 by the Centers for Disease Control revealed that fully 60 percent of all AIDS cases in the United States are found among homosexual men. This is an amazingly high figure, especially when we consider that homosexuals — contrary to Kinsey's flawed study and fabricated “one-in-ten” myth — constitute only about 1 to 2 percent of our total population.

The conclusion is simple. Homosexual activists say they want equal rights and treatment. Fine. Let’s use their own arguments against them here. Let’s start by having them pay their fair share of the healthcare costs that accompany their lifestyle.

Long-term medical treatment for HIV and AIDS is usually protracted and tremendously expensive. Maybe that’s why gay activists are pushing so hard for spousal benefits for domestic partners of homosexuals — so somebody else, like the government or an employer, will pick up the tab.

“Risky” behavior is called risky for a reason. It means that by doing it, you put your life in danger. It’s really a lot like gambling for high stakes. The more you play, the more you stand to lose. For indulging in this risky behavior, you rightfully SHOULD pay more for both life and health insurance.

This isn’t a religious or even a moral values argument. This is strictly a common sense fiscal argument. You play risky, you pay more. That’s only fair. In fact, if these types of policies aren’t implemented, then health-conscious people are the ones being discriminated against.

You can’t blame the insurance companies for charging more. After all, their likelihood of having to pay out large sums of money on behalf of their gay clients is significantly greater.

Drinking and smoking, for example, are all directly related to dozens of diseases and medical conditions. So insurance companies habitually charge higher premiums. But non-smokers, non-drinkers and those who exercise get better rates than those who don’t practice such healthy lifestyle choices.

What about skydivers, hang gliders, and racecar drivers — do they pay the same life insurance premiums as those who watch birds or collect stamps? Not hardly.

The same logic should be applied to practicing homosexuals. When actuaries and insurance underwriters finally figure out this formula, we may see some instantaneous lifestyle changes.

After all, their risky homosexual behavior is a lifestyle choice, not a destiny. If the proven threat to their health won’t do the trick, maybe the cost to their pocketbooks will.

Speechless. I fear for them when they meet their maker.

Not this s--- again. Sure, there are a small number of weirdos out there, but there's no reason to think a significant number of gay men are "chasers" or "givers."

Right, "gay" men are normal and natural and none of them want AIDS. That's why so few of them have it. And why they're so careful not to give it to their lifelong "spouses" whom they are so faithful to.

The astronomical costs of treating an HIV/AIDS maggot in their last couple of years is one of the big factors in our high medical insurance costs.

Articles like this and the self destructive behavior of the Gay population point out this incredible financial blow to all countries including ours.

Now the leader of France wants an HIV/AIDS tax on wealthy nations to pay for the cost of treatment.

Well since you don’t know s--- from shinola I’m betting those of us who are not blinded by the homosexual agenda will take your opinion with a grain of salt or perhaps an enema. I guess all those friends of yours who practice perversion don’t frequent bathhouses, rest stops, circuit parties and think sodomy is normal…right? All your homosexual friends are just regular guys and gals who only just want to settle down, have children, lead a “normal” suburban life, retire and take care of the grand children on the weekends when their kids want to sneak away to the Hamptons…hmm?

Go push your agenda somewhere else.

Where does all of this money come from for those in SanFran who are collecting? Is this money federal?

I don't know exactly. Some is fed I think. Some is from the city of SF I surmise, as an HIV-infected gay friend of mine just moved from SF to another city in CA and complains that the benefits are not as good. I know he lived in an excellent 2-bd view apt in SF where he had to pay only a fraction of what his neighbors paid thanks to some sort of rent subsidy. I knew him before he "caught" the virus, am well aware that he intentionally went out to get it, though he does not admit it. So I know more than I want to know, really.

Let's see some scientific evidence that a substantial portion of gay men are "givers" and/or "chasers"... you can't provide it.

So even though you have no scientific evidence, my opinion is illegitimate because I don't hate gay people enough.

I could just as easily claim there are a huge number of straight women who want to be raped, by looking up a few postings on the internet and extrapolating them to the population at large.

I’m sure even you can grasp the fact (CDC figures) that when homosexuals account for 55-60% of new AIDS cases in this country and they’re ONLY 2-3% of population, that obvious to everyone else BUT YOU, they are both voluntary “givers” and “chasers”. Circuit parties, rest stops and bathhouses aren’t part of the heterosexual culture in the same percentage of the population, to suggest such is just more of your homosexual propaganda and lies.

Comparing homosexual promiscuity to women wanting to be raped simply shows how ridiculous you need to be to defend the indefensible.

From the Rolling Stone article, Dr. Bob Cabaj, director of behavioral-health services for San Francisco County and past president of both the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists, says:
Some men consciously seek the virus, openly declaring themselves bug chasers, he says, while many more are just as actively seeking HIV but are in denial and wouldn't call themselves bug chasers. Cabaj estimates that at least twenty-five percent of all newly infected gay men fall into that category.

It's a sad situation anyway you look at it.

???? You do understand that homosexuals deserve the same respect and dignity that heterosexuals deserve. However, homosexual activity is disordered and depraved. Do you intentionally take a liberal stance and attempt to combine the person with the activity further implying one must love or accept homosexual activity?

Sorry, that's an unscientific estimate, pulled out of his own backside. Just because a scientist says something doesn't make it true or "scientific." I mean a real study. I'm disappointed that RS or other publications would even repeat this story without seeing that there is no evidence to back up the claim that a significant number of gay men feel this way.
