My daughter is going to get her first rifle

On or around the Feb.01,2005, I will get my daughter [age 11] will get her first .22 rifle. I will be getting her a Henery Lever action Youth model. I will also be getting a larger version for myself, so we can go shooting together. I post this in order to get other "Freepers" input on this. Her mother [is a critter lover] is very aginst hunting, but has let me get her one so we can go target shooting on the local range. I hope that this will make for some great "Daddy & Daughter" days!

Yes, that's my favorite chocolate too and it's the absolute best for making chocolate chip cookies. I can find it locally but maybe that's because there are many German and Swiss in this area.

We can also find it locally, it's just that my wife is from Germany and we get a box full of stuff - chocolate (Milka and others too) newspapers, coffee, and so on - from her family.

As others have since revealed, my disagreement was more chauvinistic in nature. My boy got his first revolver on his sixth birthday ;o)

Having two attractive daughters who both started shooting when they were about 9 or 10, both were qualified with .22 handguns and rifles through .30 cal carbines when they were 14, I have to strongly disagree with you.

That's fine. I have a son and a daughter, and though my son and I have been on several hunting trips, the thought of taking my daughter hunting has never crossed my mind. In the same way, my son is excluded when my wife teaches my daughter to cook this or that.

That may be wrong, but it's the way of my conscience and will not change.

At nine, I was hunting whitetails with my .410 and rifled slugs, and got my first deer when I was 11. Although it was my gun, there were very strict rules about handling, storage, and it could only be brought out under parental supervision. It was stored with the rest of the family long guns, and that was strictly forbidden territory unless mom or dad said it was OK.

In retrospect, I might not have been quite as careful with my gun (shotgun, that is) had it not been 'mine'. The sense of propriety made for some coddling for that old bolt action, and I never failed to clean and oil it after every trip to the duck blind.

The day my daughter was born, I tried to get her grandpa to buy her a shotgun... I'd have taken real good care of it, 'til she was old enough!

Can't you purchase a rifle for her to use without making it "hers" until she's older?
Giving the kid a sense of ownership will make her more responisble IMO.
