Just jumping in here at this late hour - I think that what you are referring to (people just off the boat collectin SocSec) is actually SSI - Supplemental Security Income. It isn't based on what you've paid in, and isn't a retirement check - it's welfare. Period. The program is administered by the Social Security Administration, so most people assume that it is the same thing as Soc Sec. I'm not saying I agree with it, I don't. I think it stinks. It just isn't Social Securuty, and doesn't come out of the same pot of money. Not that that makes any difference.

The Social Security benefit you're talking about is Supplemental Security Income...Mrs.L works for the state of TX which administers this abomination to anyone who can crawl up to the desk and who the doctors determine to be unable to work, or who is "aged."
