The audience last night was very small, which made me sad. I'm afraid people won't have a chance to see this film before they yank it in favor of the next Godzilla flick!

I rarely go to movies, but this is one I will probably go see. I was a little young when he died, but I've seen some specials on him and he had a very interesting life. Kevin Spacey was on AMC talking about the other week and it really seems good.

"This movie is simply outstanding and deserves to be seen in a theater with surround sound -- please don't wait for the DVD..."

Why would one wish to go to a movie theater and pay what it costs for the DVD to get in, to sit in a cramped seat that is usually sticky and dirty, get charged a small fortune for stale popcorn and flat Pepsi and watch it listening to some crapy surround sound system?

Thanks for the reminder to go see that film. A few weeks back, Kevin Spacey played in our little local theater to a sold-out crowd, singing Darin songs with a 15 piece band. He was fabulous! I went out of curiosity, not being a Spacey fan but liking Darin's classics. You could literally feel the anticipation in the audience before he started singing - "Can he really sing like Bobby Darin?" He started out with "Hello Young Lovers" and everyone was amazed. The third song was "Mack the Knife" and by that time, he had convinced the crowd completely. It was like time travel back to a cool club of the early 1960's.

Thanks for the ping, afraid !!

This is totally amazing as I read this thread. You are so nice to give a heads up to a film when there are so few that interest me these days, and then as I read down a little way..the criticism begins !!

Seems like every thread these days are fraught with some curmudgeon.!! Oh well, whatever floats yer boat !

Just this note to thank you ! I heard from a friend this is one great movie too !

I picked up a compilation of Darin songs on CD after I heard Spacey hawking the movie on a few talk shows. I wanted the original not the Spacey version (I'm a purist).

I miss Bobby Darin. Like Spacey's mom, my mother adored him and used to play all his records. Apparently that was the impetus for this movie; Spacey's mom adored him and said he HAD to make a movie about him. He got lots of background material from Darin's family. Originally they didn't want Spacey to sing or play him, but they came around.

Thanks for the review!

Okay, I found the movie site and it also has cuts from the entire soundtrack. Wow! Kevin Space nails it.

Beyond the Sea (Official Site)

I am going to see this movie later on this week.

Yes, Kevin Spacey was excellent portraying Bobby Daren. However, what was fact and what was fantasy? Was he actually this big Vietnam war protester? I actually took somewhat a different spin on the whole movie. One thing that really jumped out at me was the anti-war theme. Kevin Spacey is one of the Hollywood crowd that is anti-Bush and, of course, anti-Iraqi war. And, Spacey is quite clever in how he slips this into the movie in an anti-Vietnam theme.

Basically the war in Vietnam wasn't lost in the jungles of Vietnam, but in the streets and universities of America.
