The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It was thumb size. He's redoing it.

OK - I got it.... Questions... it's a little dinky thumbnail size pic... is that what you want enlarged? Where's the original? What in particular are you trying to show on her?

If I enlarge this pic it will be pretty pixilated.

Well I went to Walmarts today. We cleaned out our tack area and put our stuff in a "chest". I also bought a plastic tool box for my first aide kit. I got a lot of stuff but it's going to take me a few pay checks to completely stock it:')

I want you to see the area under her eye that looks like yellow matting. On original at 75% zoom it's very visable.

Her tail was about a foot longer than it is now.

This is a better picture - her buddies tail was down to her hocks, although not as thick as Dusty's.

This is the yearling - her tail was past her hocks and quite thick.

I bet it has to do with the weather. Harley suddenly started eating one of the post in the barn, and I noticed that Rocky has eaten some bark off a tree out back. Seems when it gets cold they do that.

Oh, I wanted to tell you, my son was here yesterday, and I was showing him some of the pictures. He commented that the sorrel mare on the who's who's paage of yours looked like a really nice horse:)

That might be it - they have been eating the wood posts and the kick panels in the loafing sheds too. Bob just last week had to paint no crib stuff on them.

Do you think the tail bags would stop the tail eating? Maybe vet wrap?

Can you send me the original? Did I get the right picture? I don't see anything under her eye. Are you trying to show the side that was injured?

While Hair is working on it for me, here's the story. I saw something yellowish and I though she had some matting on one of her eye lashes. I tried to wash it off but I couldn't so I took hold of it thinking it was an eyelash. I felt it give and pulled off some kind of plant material. It was attatched at the end out but then split in two parts and each one kind of rounded and dark on the end. I took it outside to take a picture but it blew off. Maybe something got on her afterwards but it really felt like I pulled tips out of her. I'm wondering if she could have punctured herself on a sharp piece of hay or something.

Oh dear... that is so sad! My pony rubs her tail out in the summer, luckily hers grows back in fast... in time for her to rub it out again in the spring.

She is a sweetheart. Funny, we bought her from a guy that was going to take her to the auction. Scared to death of her, as were the owners before him.

She's a big mare but very gentle. Just wants to be right in your face to be petted. I guess her actions with her size intimidated them, but her actions are not at all agressive.

I think the tail bag, or vet wrap would work. I did put Belle's in a tail bag, but I don't know if Dot would have ate it anyway. It was a precaution.

I didn't have any luck stopping Rocky from cribbing painting that stuff on the posts and things. We've got everything hot wired. When it warms up, I'm going to run a wire down that post Harley is eating before he caves in my barn:)

I guess it could be that maybe a weed or stick was in the hay - that happens sometimes. I can't see anything in the picture of her though.

It's not as clear as the one I zoomed but I can see it because I know where I'm looking. Look almost to the corner below that white spot. It looks like a lighter lower lash.
