The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I got my thermometer at a supply store. Isoproyl alcohol, iodine betadine, guaze, bandages, cotton wraps, leg wraps, scissors, (The curved kind) an extra halter, leadline, (If you want to put together an emergency kit), calm and cool, a twitch, banamine paste, bute, furizone, malox for colic.. make sure that your thermometer comes in a case, or protective tube. You don't want it to break and get the mercury all over the place. Oh vasiline is good too.

A sulfa ointment? I see now that I may need a bigger box:') Seriously, It was really bad when my trainer told me to clean it and put some antibioic ointment on it. Fixing that problem today. I have furizole (ms I know) and granulex and that was it. My wipe box was on my rack but when I opened it, it was empty.

"DMSO?"

Don't get it on your skin unless you really, really like garlic.

Good. The last thing that you need is people stealing your medical supplies. The last barn that I was at, the students always used to steal my saddle to ride in lessons or hack. Drove me crazy.

"DMSO?"

Defense Modeling and Simulation Office -- The Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) is the catalyst organization for Department of Defense (DoD) modeling and simulation (M&S) and ensures that M&S technology development is consistent with other related initiatives.

The DMSO performs those key corporate level functions necessary to encourage cooperation, synergism, and cost-effectiveness among the M&S activities of the DoD Components. The DMSO supports the warfighter by leading a defense-wide team in fostering the interoperability, reuse, and affordability of M&S and the responsive application of these tools to provide revolutionary warfighting capabilities and improve aspects of DoD operations.

DMSO Liniment.... reduces swelling in legs in particular... strong stuff, if you get it on your skin you can taste it... they make a roll-on so you don't have to handle it.

Well I can usually find the saddle :'). It's the small stuff that is a scavenger hunt. As my trainer told me though, I'm just like the rest of her boarders and if I wouldn't leave stuff "out" it wouldn't walk off as easy. She made a good point but even if I left my cart out or open, people know if it belongs to them or not. She gave me a space that I can put a lock box though. So if I don't lock my stuff up when I get it then I only have me to blame, I guess.

Bute.... buy and have some bute on hand as a general anti inflammatory for swelling or pain, and something to mash it up with, and a syringe to give it orally... with molasses and a little water.

I have a bottle of tabs on hand...

Sure, what's showing?

Keep in mind, I don't share popcorn. Last time I tried to share with a horse, the SOB kept knocking it all over the place trying to get his big ol' hoves in the bucket.

DMSO acts as an agent to carry other meds into the blood stream also. Always keep that in the back of your mind when you use it - make sure the site you put in on is very clean and always use plastic gloves when applying it. Otherwise, you will end up sending dirt, etc along with the meds and you'll be treating yourself with whatever meds you are giving the horse.

If you get it on your hands, you will be tasting garlic in your mouth for a good while.

I always like to have several rolls of vet wrap on hand. It's cheap... found at any feed store... Good for wrapping wounds over gauze, but also good for wrapping around an ice pack on a leg to keep it in place... sticks to itself.

DMSO is also a drug carrier. If you mix it with whatever you are using, furizone for example for a leg sweat, it will carry the furizone deeper into the tissues.
