The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It's my shirt, but it came from Spain. There was a guy at an Andalusian/Lusitano booth at Equitana who was selling them several years ago, so I think the chance of finding the transfer over here are slim to none. I didn't know if the picture of it would be good enough to make a transfer from or not.

Did you ever met Lance personally, see him? What you'd think.

No, I didn't. The guy that came to get Juma is the guy that's riding him now. A very soft spoken, slim, short guy.

Have you met Lance personally? If you have, tell me about him. He has pics on his website, does he have really long hair?

Interesting...

Now that you bring up the barrel horse guy Lance Graves, I remember now about Juma. I get all the horses messed up.

Well, they have put a lot of those hurky QH's on tiny feet. How long ago did the injury happen to Bud? if it's long healed of the acute break, and he seems sound, could he do light duty like taking kids for rides or Saturday light trail riding? Is the bone always vulnerable you think?

I'll ask Mack. He knows more about what you can do on getting a transfer made. Of course you can run into copyrights and stuff.

I don't know If I printed that up and took it to kinkos they could make one. The companies I order from you have to orde lots of each custom one to get a decent price. Can't get just a few.

You might try that. Print a picture of that shirt onto a printer, cut it out so that just the horse head show, then take it to kinkos and ask them to make a transfer. I "think" then can do that, and make them any size desired. I think:) And I think the transfers you get there can be applied with just an iron. Might not be as good a quality, but maybe better then nothing.

The only thing I know about him is...well...he's a bit light in his loafers:). I bet the guy who picked your horse up is his "friend":)

Other then that I think he's a nice guy and a good hand with a horse.

It happened about 5 or 6 years ago. When he first did it, he was very lame for a long time. He limped at the walk for about a year, then at the trot for another year, now he doesn't limp at all. He's not really a kid horse, he's sensitive and quick and strong. He's never done anything stupid, like buck or runaway or anything. He never spooks, either. I would take him on the trails if I didn't have anything else to ride but I'd always be apprehensive going up and down hills, know what I mean? If he fell on me, I'd be a goner.

He's funny because he loves water so much. I can put him in the pasture with my stock tank during the summer and he's always in it.

I wouldn't think copyrights would be a problem since it came from Spain, but I don't know anything about them.

LOL I've never heard that expression before, "light in his loafers." I kind of guessed that he was, not too many masculine cowboys run barrels. The guy that picked Juma up was probably "light", too. I did get that impression.

I don't either really. I just know that in my catalogs that I order from all the pictures have copyright stamped across them/ Problably to keep people from doing just what I'm telling you to do:)

Yeah, around here anyway, any male running barrels is almost always light. It's kind of funny to hear them carrying on at the barrel races. I was just curious if you knew:)

Really? Jeepers, I know a lot of the guys that ride fancy show horses don't touch the ground when they walk, but I thought cowboys would be more masculine than any of them!

Well - years ago my husband competed in gamed events, most included barrels. Also trained barrel horses for some lady friends. Over the years he's done a bit of everything except english.

We have several older men around here that run barrels, that are not that way. I think this men are old cowboys who have been hurt and can't do the roping stuff anymore. I think they've figure out the crazy women barrel racers will pay alot of money too for a good barrel horse.

Well, my hubby and I were just talking about it.... because there's a lot of heterosexual men who ride horses, ride trail, or do the other cowboy sports like roping or bull riding... stuff like that... But when it comes to showing horses... it's wimmin and gay men. It's like, guys like horses, but they don't compete in it... that's what wimmin do. I think barrel racing seems invented to give wimmin something to do at rodeos, and maybe that's why the real men won't do it.

Exceptions to this rule I think are in the Olympic levels of show jumping and eventing, where there are a lot of foreign men from Europe and South America who compete. Surprisingly, maybe, because English is viewed as prissier, I don't think they are all gay... because some are married to other big named riders. Lots of couples in the sport. I think this aversion to horse showing is a distinctly American male characteristic. They'll rope, ride bulls, that kind of thing, but not dress up in outfits and trot around the ring...

I went to high school with this guy, many moons ago, that used to run barrels. He had a beautiful black horse named Sea Charge (dumb, I know) He's married now and is some kind of a DO type doctor near where I currently live. I looked him up on classmates.com and that's how I knew he was married and a doctor. He also said in his profile that he married his high school sweetheart. The sweetheart must not have known what he was doing with all the barn chickies when she wasn't around. I know this for a fact because I was one of the chickies.

Yeah, and those types could do with a little women type horse training too usually, IMO.

I think dogs are the same way. Lotsa guys ~have~ dogs, but the ones that ~show~ dogs are a bit, well, 'poofy'.
