The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, you're right. I just got the book out and looked.

You know I read that book as a kid alot. But after I got horses, and started learining about them, alot of things took on whole new meanings. I swear everytime I'm going down a trail and my horse wants to turn at some point, and I want him to go straight, I think of that part in the book where that one man reported to the father of that boy about seeing the boy beating on some pony that had tried to turn into it's old driveway from habit.

Well, when Bay's knees were all skinned bare and swelled up like melons, I thought he's be scarred for life because of that book!

I wish now I'd have had the camera... I was 'between' digicams then. My first one had broken.

Well it was just during the night. He doesn't show any other diabetic signs. I'm just going to watch him for now. He is the sweetest thing and it makes me so mad that they booted him out. There were other ways. They could have limited his areas.

You've got that right about foals. Hope had another boo-boo about the same time as the one on her head. She cut her right front ankle almost to the bone on an old piece of tin. I had it stitched, but it got infected anyway. There was alot of deep mud around the barn and there was just no way to keep it clean, even with a bandage, so the stitches ended up pulling out. The cut was about as long as my index finger and got about as wide with proud flesh. The vet told me to use Granulex on it and it worked really well too. The proud flesh went away and there's no scar there either. Poor baby, if she hadn't been an imprinted foal I don't know how I would've gotten it all doctored. She didn't like it, but she let me do it without a fuss. I just tied her to a barn post next to her mom and she'd stand there and let me work on her. She always got a little handfull of feed when we were done as her treat.

Sarah Lee just stood still and closed her eye while I fixed her up. It's probably going to be a whole different story when she gets a shot tonight.

Bladder stones in neutered male cats is really common... and REALLY painful and expensive. I'd switch him to the special feed anyway. It doesn't cost ~much~ more than any other good food.

Ok, now I know what happened. I had my book right here. It was a drunk named Reuben Smith that broke Beauty's knees. It was his second or 3rd owner, he was riding Beauty full speed and was too drunk to notice that he threw a shoe. He was running on rocks, being whipped to go faster, tearing up that foot and stumbled from the pain, landing on his knees.

I'm going to. They got him from the humane society but I haven't read his paperwork yet about his exact age.

He's a masochist, he wants to wait to see what he'll be hit back with. (or is that a sado-masochist?)

That book would just make me mad at people.

I remember, I think, that BB felt betrayed and confused because even though the guy was a drunk, he had been pretty good to him. BB didn't understand why all of the sudden he was whipping him and not noticing the thrown shoe.

It's like the pony thing with the boy.... seeing these events through the horse's perspective.

Macks not here for me to whine too, so you all have to listen,:

I'm cold, I hate winter, I hate snow, I'm cold....

:)

It has slowed down some, not the big fat stuff, but still coming down pretty good.

Glad to hear no eye damage. Yes, tetanus, always good to do that even though they have it yearly. Just keep it open as it heals.

You're right, I've read this book a zillion times as a kid, I can't read it now. I can't read books where kids are harmed, either.

Speaking of books, have you read "Mustang: Wild Spirit of the West" by Marguerite Henry? I remember liking that one alot, too.

My favorites will always be The Black Stallion books. And anything by E B White.

Some people are just nutsoid about animals and think they're nasty or dangerous or any number of other stupid things.

It almost made me cry whey you said that some of the old folks were crying because Coochie had to go. I can just imagine myself in that situation and how I would feel. Animals have always been my closest relationships. And to not be able to have one would just be unimaginable. Those old folks in homes have so little to look forward to anyways, and to take that away just because some visiting asshole doesn't like cats is cruel!
