I was beginning to wonder when you were gonna show up and start bugging me again, Mr. Fake Horse Expert.

I did read about that but didn't see how prevalent it is. What did you read?

Sure follows along with what we've been discussing, doesn't it?

The arena I used to show at had white arena walls... Those horses, I remember one who looked like he had stood in paint up to the elbow and was otherwise brown, actually looked really funny going around the ring. Horse with no legs.... was a little unsettling!

The AKC does NOT recognize "silver" Labs.

Color

The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black--Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow--Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate--Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification.

That is straight off www.akc.org.

Somebody, as Topsy said, ain't tellin' all they knows . . .

They are registering them as chocolates, they appear to be a mutation of Chocolate, not of black. I'd quote from this site, but they've disabled all ability to plagerize them... ;~D

Have you ever seen the movie "The Woman in Red"? The horse that Kelly LeBrock is riding is really pretty. Wonder what breed it is. Kind of looks like a Friesan but I didn't notice any feathering.

I wouldn't say its been an open discussion. More like you throwing in your two cents. When you all are serious about a discussion on the topic, let me know. :)

I looked at the photos on the website you linked, and it seems pretty clear that the dogs are really just a washed out Chocolate. They don't look much like Weimaraners . . . the head is pure Lab - blocky and with the Lab earset. The body and legs aren't Weim either.

This I think is an example of shade variation within the color. We see this in Blue Point Siamese . . . you can have Blue Points with an (undesirable) buff or brown tone to the blue color. I have one little Blue female who has very pronounced buff shading to her blue color -- my big Blue male has the true slate-blue tone, and if you put them side by side it's obvious.

They're pretty, but I think the website's assertion that it's only a matter of time before AKC recognizes the color is just whistling in the dark. You couldn't show those dogs.

Of course, they'd be perfectly good for anything else you wanted to do, so long as their hips and eyes are good and they don't have temperament problems. That's the problem with breeding from a restricted gene pool - especially in the first few generations.

Tuffy, most guys who watched the movie would say they could care less what she was riding. She could have been riding a stick horse for all I cared. Did you think Gene Wilder was hot in that movie?

Sorry! Misunderstood. I have seen some silver Weimaraners and they're cute. There are a couple of Weims that do agility, they strike me as somewhat flighty dogs (look who's talking - I have the Original Flighty Dog even though she's settled down a bit.)

I must admit, I thought he was kinda cute, in an endearing sort of way. I've always been a Gene Wilder fan, though.

He's a Walker that racks. That's really where the Racking horse registry came from way back when.
