The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think maybe she has appaloosa in her background because 1) her eyes and her feet and 2) now I found out that some appaloosas carry the gene for sabino.

Theoretically though, because her feet have the wide striping, she may not throw appaloosa colored foals, especially if bred to a paint. But, seems like a good chance that she'd throw another sabino. Whatever she had, there would be no chance of the lethal white gene showing up.

It appears that the sabino coat pattern shows up in many breeds of horses, including draft and mustang.

So how would the registering work? If she is a registered sabino would the foal automaically be too, or only if it showed sabino characteristics?

I don't know how that registry works. It appears that only those with the sabino pattern are eligible for registration. I saw a place there that you could email for information if you had questions though.

Well, if you aren't into interesting you could just ignore all my theorizing :) because that's really all it is. SL is not an appaloosa as defined by the ApHC. She may have (I think she does) appaloosa breeding because she has some of the characteristics. Lot of the old time quarter horses did also - some of the foundation appaloosa stock were quarter horses in name.

I bookmarked it. We are going out of town this weekend but next week I'm going to look over it and see if she qualifies.

Sorry if I go on and on. Genetics fascinate me. It was my favorite part of anatomy/physiology in college. I used to play with big letter/small letter % on my note pad during boring sociology lectures.

Didn't quite get to bed but did get the kitchen stuff done :) I'm fascinated by genetics, and have been reading all I can on horse genetics and appaloosas in particular for the past twenty years. Trying to take some of the guess work out of breeding them I guess.

LOL about all I've found so far is that what can be predicted is not what I'm looking for. But it is amazing that I've gotten to the point where I can see certain lines of breeding in apps before I see their papers. Some breed true down through the generations.

Well I was impressed with how yall could look at my horse and come up with markers from her chin to her feet. I now feel fairly sure that her family tree definately doesn't go straight up:')

Most paint people would look at Tuffy and say "frame overo" but if you get real technical, he's a combination of overo and sabino, called sabero.

Sabino is commonly confused as overo and roan, or so says my color genetics book.

Have all these different type's been around for a long time or just developing as a result of so much breeding for paints? I have only heard of overo, tobiano, and just in the last few years tovero.

AAM, thanks for the info on the lethal white thing with the cat post.

Do you think this sort of thing happens because of so much in breeding breeding for a certain trait, such as for paint, and taillessness?

That's too bad if so. I think breeding should be for overall, and not so much for 1 certain trait. I know around here there are alot of paints who have some really bad confirmation flaws. Mostly very short necks. There are alot of backyard breeders around here, and they all seems to want paint, and as long as they get that, they think they've done good:) I've seen some pretty bad confirmation paints but people still comment "isn't he/she pretty" and I'm thinking "what are you looking at:)" I was guilty of not being able to see past color before. It was when I started looking at horses, that I didn't particularly like the color, but still the horse was pretty that I learned it's more to do with confirmation then color that makes a pretty horse.
