The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

This is my mare Truly, a 10yr old black registered Racking Horse. I trained her myself. She's had one filly, 2yr old Grace, and is due to foal again in April.

This is Bluebell & Hope. Bluebell is a 9yr old blue roan registered Racking mare and Hope is a 7mth old blue roan unregistered racking filly. Bluebell is due to foal again in May. I know they don't look roan, but that's just the way roans are in winter.

WHOO HOOQ!!!:)

Baby coming in May:)

The vet said since the mare is long bodied, she won't show much, she also said that the foal is small, but not small enough to raise concerns. It's laying length wise with it's legs up. She had hold of one of it's knees:)

I'm so excitedd:) Pictures later.

Becky

This goes back as far as the famous Mister Jorrocks, the Master of the Handley Cross Hunt, who said (I'm paraphrasing 'cause I don't have the book in front of me) that the color is the least important thing about a horse, but it's the first thing every beginner asks (that's how you tell he's a beginner . . . )

It's the same as the gene for taillessness in Manx cats.

The same gene that carries the desired trait (Overo or taillessness) also carries a factor that causes death. In Manx cats, the missing tail factor when doubled causes severe spinal deformity and death.

That's why Manx breeders always have tailed and partially-tailed cats in their breeding program. Tailless to tailless breedings result in many dead kittens.

Since Handley Cross was written back in the 1830s IIRC, I bet that nobody in England had ever SEEN an Appy. . . . that was long before Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was touring, and I think at that time the only folks who had 'em were the Nez Perce.

I really didn't think she was. Even the vet said she wasn't showing at all, but that didn't mean anything. Obviously it didn't:)
