Thread Four: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1332664/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Another more point worth mentioning and then I'll drop the topic in fear of being called something worse than dork...
Remember that many overos actually express a mixture of two or even all three types of overo genes. The fact is that many Paints are a mixed jumble of overo. This can make it quite difficult sometimes to exactly identify a horse's pattern because it is, in fact, exhibiting characteristics of more than one type.
I don't know - I have to defer to others because I don't know anything about paints.
You got some butter on that there popcorn? Junior mint?
It's doubtful that they will come undone but put a drop of crazy glue on the screw. That will hold but can be broken loose with a screw driver if you ever want to take it apart. I do that with the screws holding the silver on halters and head stalls.
Lots of butter.... it's getting all over my keyboard.
I just remembered to send you that video clip I told you about last night. Let me know if you get it.
That's why the good lord invented jeans (and the sofa).
These are the ones that I really think have some appaloosa in their background. The roaning type is an appaloosa coat pattern and I've seen foals off a quarter horse mare and an appaloosa stud that had that really ragged outline spots.
My other color experience is with appys as a kid, and I think they are even more of a gamble to predict what you are going to get.
I like Arabs - no preference for color, though Arab breeders spend a lot of time head-scratching about how to predict greys.
I have to agree with Becky - how could he not palpate her for heavens sake? There are wonderful things called drugs that will make her relax - has he never heard of making a war bridle in place of having a halter? Boy, we don't know anything. AAAWWWWKKKKKK
He's faking. He's getting all that stuff off the paint horse website.
I ain't fallin' for it.
The mare POA that this lady has is, what I think is called a leopard spotted color. The spots are palamino color. The yearling is a solid gold, but not what I think of as palamino.
I've heard, but am not for sure, that the foal she is now carrying will go back to the stable if it's colored.
I'm not really sure what she is going to do with any of them. My neighbor has told me that she has figured out, it might be better to sell these and start over with something broke. But then I hear of her "working" with them.
Like I said, I've never met her, my info all comes thru the neighborhood grape vine...and you know how accurate that can be.
Becky
Okay, you have a problem with your vet. When Bob palpates our mares, he can feel the foal, has even had foals try to nibble on his hand - they can't because his hand is in a totally different area but they can feel it.
I, sir, do not fake! My wife on the other hand....
I've learned form experience that color should be the at the bottom of deciding if you want a certain horse or not. You need to look past color at conformation and attitude. I'm not real fond of greys either, but I've also learned, it's more how one is built if they are really pretty or not. I'm not that fond of Harleys color, but I think he's a beautiful horse. He's just put together so well that makes him pretty. Rusty's confirmation is pretty good to, not as good as Harleys tho. Color is not what makes them pretty, it can just make them prettier:)
Becky
I'm so glad someone else said that too:)
Becky
You're fakin'. And all wives fake from time to time, you guys just can't tell the difference. Ever see that movie with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal?
You two are funny:)
Becky
No, I'm funny. Keith's a dork.
