The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You hate winter? I would never have guessed! : )
I hope you dont mind, but I have a question concerning Sugar our very pregnant mare. Yesterday she laid down most of the day, apart from eating, and looking at her today (with our farrier and trainer), she looked like she had a tire in her belly. That is the best way of describing the shape. If look at her from backside on, you can see a definate line going through the middle, seperating the "tire" in two. Have you seen this before in a very pregnant mare?

He made it. Got all three shoed. and even hired him to put some posts up for me to help make the front look better. He fences on the side. Will do that in a few weeks.

I'm having lunch, then I'm out of here for the afternoon:)

Have good rides... we're fogged in... The sun we had yesterday is likely still up there, but we can't see it.

I'm so sorry. That is so depressing to go from sun to that foggy.

Since I'll only be walking I'll take the camera, but the pictures will most likely be things you've already seen before. But at least you will know that the sun really is still up there:)

Any other recommendations on making the transition easier

Again, I don't know what kind of fencing you have or how visible it is, but if it's any kind of wire, I would take steps to make it as visible as possible (tape flags if it's hard to see?), and before the new guy gets turned out in the pasture, hand-walk him around the whole perimeter so that he can see the whole fence. This allows him to explore the whole boundary at a safe controlled speed, and ratchets down the over-excitement of rushing around, being in a new place, and possibly running the fence. After that, let him explore it loose as he will, alone, without someone chasing him the first time.

I am trying to envision what you are describing - just got back on line - we lost power for awhile. Are you saying that looking at her from her rump, both sides stick out very rounded and equally? If that's the case, generally this late in a pregnancy, the sides have gone in and the belly has dropped down.

I think you might want to have someone palpate that mare - I keep reading your post trying to understand what you are describing and admit to being terribly confused.

Her underneath looks like it has a tire in it. Very noticable. It is very low, and when you stand at her rear end and look underneath (my farrier was the first to notice) There is a line running from back to front "through" the "tire" shape.
I am calling my vet again, to see what he has to say.

I scanned some pictures here of what you should be seeing.

When you call your vet ask him if he thinks he should come out and palpate her. That is not something I recommend you do yourself.

The first two pictures above are or a mare that is ten days from foaling. The middle ones are mares that have had the foal drop into position - books say within two weeks, my experience has been within about 24 hours. The bottom two are of a mare ready to foal.

There is a "crease" or indentation that can appear running longways along the underside of the mare, that you can sortof begin to see in the grey mare in this picture:

I ~believe~ that is the increased blood supply running back to feed the babe, and the mare's udder.

There is a BAD thing that can happen where there is an actual rupture of her abdominal musculature, where the baby is 'falling to the bottom'. She'd be in pain.

You should not see this: Late Term Pregnancy Problems in the Mare - Ventral Ruptures

she looks a lot bigger than those photos, her tail bone is noticable, in front of her hips it is hollow. It is her belly that looks different. It was kind of pointed, it has now gone flat and curved, just like a tire was in her, laying flat. It looks strange, not a bit like Misty, so I have the vet coming out here tommorow morning.

Ping to my above... I think it's rare, but I saw one of these once on one of the emergency animal shows. It was more evident there than in the pic above.

One more question - is she laying down like a dog with her feet under her or stretched out on her side? She will be very tired but generally won't be comfortable laying on her side for any length of time unless the baby has dropped.

How much concern did the vet express... do you think you were overstating or understating the issue? (I always feel like I am doing one or the other with mine) How concerned were your farrier and/or trainer who could also see it with their eyes?

I would increase the urgency on the vet then.
