Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
My daffodills are coming up too?
But lordy it's cold this morning. 30, but the wind is blowing ferociously.
I hate winter:).
If the weather had held my barn was the next thing to get worked on too.
Becky
Yes, I may have to test it. I'll keep ya'll posted.
I wish we were in a freak springtime but no such luck, supposed to be in the 20's tonight. One year, when we were living in a neighborhood, we had our last freeze in January. My next door neighbor had several peach trees that went nuts with peaches that year. I had to leave my car doors locked or I would have buckets of peaches in there. She then started leaving them on my front porch. We had peach cobbler at every get together. I like peaches but good grief.
We had been hoping to move all the tools and stuff to the back, into Bay's old stall, so that we could set up a small work area back there and the front 2/3 could be used for hay. But it's really too damp, with all this wet, the concrete floor is wet in the front. Bay's old stall is still bone dry, so we'll put it back there. It's just harder to unload is all, and we can't buy as much.
January should be our coldest month. This is just really strange!
Speaking of flies, they seem to be the only ones still thinking it's winter. They aren't back yet.
I was down in Georgia, near the florida border. I stayed over night, because the entire state of Florida was under tornado warnings.
It's been really warm here and we do still have mosquitoes. Then it gets really cold for a couple of days and the mosquitoes disappear. Doesn't stay cold long and the bugs return. Not many flies, though, just mosquitoes.
Do you remember what year that was? Sounds like fun research.
No flies is about the only thing that comes out of winter.
Becky
No kidding. I despise winter.
Let me think I think that it was october of 1997 or 98. It was ceratinly in October, and it was the week before Columbus day.
Are you immediately adjacent to a pond or something? We only get mosquitos here if you are very near a pond, within sight of it really.
Yes! I have a good sized tank (pond for you non-Texans) on my property but it is stocked with fish.
October, wow. Shouldn't be too hard to find information on that one.
morning:')
You are too young for "sore all over":') Nothing really bothered me until I turned 50 in August. The next day the aches began. I think maybe they were always there but I was just ignoring them.
This is why I bought horse blankets. My trainer was telling me the horses would do fine in colder places without them but what makes them sick is the wet cold one day and sunshine the next.
We had bees a couple of weeks ago. Horses and bees:'(
Even young people can over-do! We ain't that young, and trust me, we over-did!
Been kickin' back on the couch so far this morning, and no movement toward real activity yet.
