The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

From me to Rose yesterday:

I don't know how to put this nicely:), but has her twat stretched out real long:)...LOL.

Her reply:

LOL...Yes it has! Its swollen and pink and looks about a mile long!

From the book: Just before foaling, the mare's croup muscles relax producing a sunken appearance over the hips, and the point of the buttock becomes very poited. The vulva also relaxes and swells.

I'm not nagging:), but these posts are why I'm concerned. I'd promise I won't say anymore:)

My roan horse does that. In the spring he gets real light, but like now in the winter, he looks bay.

Keeps them interesting:)

She waxed up days ago, has been uncomfortable and/or mildly colicked since, laying down, groaning and a 'rippling' contraction was spotted. there was a description that her vulva had changed and swelled, and that she has been crabby and not wanting anyone messing with her for a few days. I don't think it is at all normal for these imminent signs to last days. Either you are saying the signs are there, or they never were there and you think you were mistaken, but if they are there, it's gone on too long and a phone call is warranted.

She can't talk to you, we can't see her, and it is really hard to advise you. The only responsible advice I can give at this point is to have a vet LOOK touch and evaluate her. I wouldn't take a chance of having my horse die, or her foal.

He sure does look like a different horse. Is he changing over time too? Will he become progressively lighter like a grey would?

No, he'll always be roan like this. You can tell if you've got a true roan when the face stays dark. On grays, the face will start to gray out first. Look back at my picture of the girls licking the car and notice Grace's face. She's already starting to gray and will eventually be white. Bluebell, Hope, Bob and Blade will all stay roan, just varing in degree from summer to winter.

I truly hope the horse ends up alright. It's really frustrating not being able to see!

Hubby and I are going to go out in a bit and look at floodwater. Some of our rivers are bulging from all this rain and incredible high temps. It's 60 degrees and has been 60 all night. Bizarro world.

Sharn says she could have been mistaken about the waxing. I haven't seen any, and neither of us has ever seen it before, so that could be the case. She is eating o.k., and acting fine. Our trainer is due by, and we'll get him to take a look at her and see what he thinks.

Very good.... Please keep us updated! We really do want everything to be fine.

Our motives are pure, but we are flyin' blind here!

I never noticed before I got Rusty, that roans faces do stay dark. It's really neat in the summer when the rest of them lightens up. I like it alot:)

It looks to be a beautiful day here, but I really don't want to ride till I get my horses feet taken care of. The farrier still hasn't called ~trying to remain patient~.

I will probably "try" to get some of that burning done....

No pictures but mine will too. I thought it was the salt and I'm all for it if it keeps the rust down:')

I tend to lean to the over cautious side so take this for what's it's worth but I might have my vet come out and check her if you can afford it, just to see how long he thinks if nothing else:')

What breed are they? You might have mentioned before, but I forgot. A gaited one?

With this warm weather, everyone gets blankets off... Here's Cyn's current weight... ~maybe~ she's gaining, maybe she's just like some of the wimmin I know who can eat an entire pie and not gain a pound.

Heh... great nostril and eye shot.

Old Bay chose the absolute muddiest spot to roll in. He's an embarrassment to the family and I think I should hide him out back. You're right, Becky, that he has an awful lot of hair under that blanket this year.

I think Cyn looks fuller in her shoulder and barrel. It's hard for me to say about her rump. I'm so use to quarter horses butts. But she definitely looks better to me.

It's her rear end that I am looking at as still pretty underdeveloped... even Arabs should have a round butt. I think it is the mustang in her that will keep her looking like she's made of beef jerky rather than beefsteak ;~D
