Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
They get under her feet all the time eating the grain that falls............and I dont mind about the chicken. I am just glad that I found it, I think the chicken must have got too close when she was laying down for it to have got crushed like that. Yuk.
I am looking out of the balcony every few mins, looking to see where she is : ) I cant do too much going out as my 2 year old has a nasty cough and keeps waking up crying. Hopefully the medicine will work soon..........
I'm new at this, but if i go by Misty.........and what i have seen in the past day with Sugar, i would say that she should have it any time! Then again I could be totally wrong.
James and I both thought she was about to have it (as described earlier) when she got "wind" of us and got up promptly. My friend said this happened to her too and the mare waited until she was sure no one was around. I am keeping away (but watching through binoculars) so as not to disturb her.
Adge is growing so fast, he seems to be Lightnings color and is short in the back like him. He is nibbling at mare and foal feed and hay. Misty seems to be quite happy to share her bucket with him! We will however get him one this week (and a new one for Sugar).
Good news... he'll shed out first around his face and then shed down the body. We'd sure love to see some more pictures!
You know he's a year older than this coming foal, don't you? :')
I promise to take some this weekend and get them on here!
He looks so well and he doesnt appear to be too nervous around us.
Actually thats one fact i did know! LOL Glad I dont age that quick!
Just read through the posts on your barn. I'm not trying to alarm you, but just want to mention a couple of things.
As RoS said earlier, I'm an electrician, and the first thing I would do is kill the circuit (which I see you've done). Get someone knowledgable about electrical stuff to check the circuit and find the problem. It could be a loose connection, or a rodent chewing through the cable (they sharpen their teeth on the metal).
Another thing to check is for the smell of smoke, or anything that's warm that shouldn't be. (I'm also a volunteer fireman). I once got a call to a house that had been burning (smoldering) for three days before anyone noticed.
Thank you deaconjim.... I have killed that circuit at the breaker. My little hand-held circuit tester gets NOTHING at all anywhere in that line. I'll be having someone out there but not till payday if it isn't an emergency.
If I smelled any kind of electrical or smoke smell, I wouldn't have the horses in there. Very fearful of such things and it's a great concern.
Are you doing halter and leading work with him? I know you are near maxed out for busy, but it gets a LOT harder the bigger he gets.
No, we don't have fescue. From what I understand, the fescue itself isn't the problem, it's a fungus that normally grows in the fescue that causes the problems. There is a new type of fescue that does not harbor the fungus, and is supposed to be safe for mares, but why chance it. I'm planning to plant my pastures in bermuda grass this spring.
Good evening! Your electrical advice mirrors what I said, guess I did learn something wiring this 4000sq ft house! LOL
I am just heading quietly over to the workshop as I cant see Sugar. BRB
If I were you, I'd clear out all the hay on the floor. Looks like there was a lot of it. Was that just from this morning?
I'm sorry, that previous post sounded rude. I only said that you should clear out the hay beacuse of the electrical troubles that you've been having. I'm worried that all that hay might be a fire hazard....
Clean out the lean to? That's a dirt floor and yeah that is wasted hay as bedding out there. I pick it when they poop in it, but other than that, why clean it out? Fire? I don't really see why.... there is no electrical in the lean to except that light overhead which is on the dead circuit.
We've been too busy so far to do much with him. Hopefully by this weekend we'll get in there for awhile.
I'd be able to do the stuff they need if I could just get rid of this job I have. I need to find a way to make a living from home. Anyone have any suggestions?
Don't worry about being rude, I just don't think the hay on the floor is an issue.
I work from home in a pretty unusual circumstance, my hubby works from home so far doing web design, but it's been spotty...
Since you're skilled in it, you could go into business as an electrician and work for yourself out of the house, but I am not sure it would mean you'd be home more... ;~D
What do you do (in general) now?
Industrial maintenance. I spent several years in the Navy, working on nuke plants (electrical systems) on submarines. I've been doing industrial maintenance as a civilian for the past 17 years.
That being said, I'd much rather write for a living. Problem is, I haven't been able to find people who are willing to pay me to do that.
Well, good luck when you do go to work with him. Watch him, watch yourself and don't turn your back on him... - they ~all~ rear up on you... they don't know any rules~
He's plenty strong now, try not to let him flip over backwards if he does rear... you should jerk and pull him down if you can. The smaller the space you work him in, and the closer to momma you stay at first, the smaller the size of the fight.
