The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No - there should be no discharge unless just mucus type. At work and scanning posts very quickly.

I would spend some investigative energy on making sure it is not an infected discharge. Touch it, smell it, try to see if you can see where it came from... I have no idea otherwise.

Yeah, that is odd, depending on where it came from.

I really don't want to alarm you. But there should be no discharge prior to birth.

I'm not sure how it works, but do you have fescue in your pasture. I've not had any experience with this problem, but I've heard from a friend who did, that if mares have fescue the last three months of preganacy, it causes the placenta to grow big and thick. It can grow across the birth canal, and it would either block the foal, or come first, which is not good.

Please don't be alarmed (too much:), but I'd really try to find out if it came from inside her. If her water hasn't broke, I think she should be very dry there, no discharge.

I'm only wondering about it at all, only because of the way you have described her laying down and groaning, and the contractions you've seen. If those were labor pains she should have had it by now if she's been in the pushing stage that long.

I really hate to post this...you've got enough to worry about. It's mostly just FYI. She more then likely is fine.

Becky

I agree... I hate to be an alarmist either, but if that discharge might have come out of her, I'd be having the vet out right away.

Think Becky explained it but could be red bag - I can't stay on line right now, darn it. Please investigate and call vet if need be - you could lose foal but could also lose mare if there has been a problem since yesterday.

OK, after your post, I went out and looked at her closely. She is dry and no dischargefrom her. I found a dead chicken that was messed up in a corner of her field. It may be that she killed it. (and made a mess on her?)She normally doesnt mind them but she has been "off" today. Broke her feed bucket too and doesnt want me looking at her one bit. I am heading out there again to check her further as my youngest is now asleep.
We dont have any fescue.
I am worried too and am going back out to check. It may be that I have everything wrong. I am inexperienced with horses, but if things dont add up Im calling a vet.
Be back in a while

I'm glad you don't have fesue. I didn't really think you did, since Misty was fine. I'm not sure if fescue affects all mares or just some.

There's really not much else for you to do then what you're doing. But if she does the lay down thing and groaning and nothing happens I'd call the vet.

I'd be glad to hear that the only thing wrong is that she murdered a chicken!

Stomping chickens and breaking feed buckets while in labor. Yeah, I can relate to that. :')

It's an odd phenomenon.... It could be that not all mares will abort, certainly there are many wild and common types of fescues that have always been part of a horse's diet... Perhaps it is particular mares who are more susceptible than others, perhaps it is a matter of how ~much~.

Well the chicken looks "crushed" and i had to wrap it, put it in a bag in the trashcan. Urgh, Why is it these things happen when deaconjim isnt here? As for the feed bucket, I dont know how she did it but it has two hooks that go over somthing and she broke on completly off.
I wished i'd found the chicken earlier, one, so that James could deal with it, and two so that i wouldnt have been worrying myself (or you all) for the past 30 mins! Sorry!

I would say she may have been rolling and the chicken was in the wrong place at the wrong time except for the feed bucket. It may very well have been "leave me the hell, alone". Too bad about the chicken but I would rather have a dead chicken (all they are good for is eating) than a compromised mare and foal.

I didn't go to the stables today. I just got home. We are going to the lake Friday and I'm trying to get my hours in.

So.... after all that... do you now believe she is back to being fine, and is not yet in any kind of labor, merely crabby and uncomfortable?
