The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We have tons of dead trees that we need to get out of here. When we bought this property it was just the house and about 9 cleared out acres of pasture. The property behind me was owned by an old man and woman who never did anything with it so it was all dense trees and vines. No way to walk through it, even. They put the place up for sale and we bought it. They were living in a tiny little dome house that we need to get hauled away, it's an eyesore and not worth anything. It doesn't even have any decent parts to give away to charity.

Oh boy. I sure hope our agent is better informed than that. I'll find out next week.

I don't remember what state you are in?

I'm in the least agricultural part of Washington State. I think that's why ours is lousy. It was here on FR people from Missouri reported that a guy had come out and walked his land, taken some soil samples, given all kinds of recommendations... So I called, and our local office was like... "you want us to come out? we have a pamplet on invasive weeds"

Ohhhhh. Surely our extension agent will be more like the Missouri guy, I'm in the middle of Horse Country, USA here. I would think our agent would stay pretty busy. I want more help than what I can find in a pamphlet. Since Tuffy has such a problem with insect allergies I want some ideas on controlling the bug population around here.

We've learned to be careful about taking out too many trees. If we do we lose what little soil we do have. But, I don't know why, we had a bunch of trees all close together that died a few years back. I've not taken then down yet because they attracted lots of interesting birds. But they are so rotted now that I'm afraid they'll come down in wind.

We have had a tree blight here, some kind of disease that's killing off a bunch of trees. I did have a tree guy come out and tell me about it, I was afraid I was doing something that was killing my trees.

The wildlife in my forest is one of the reasons we haven't done much to it. Tons of critters in there, lots of good places for them to hide and make their homes. It really does need a little cleaning, though. My husband made me a trail through it, that's about the only cleaning we've done.

It's really starting to rain hard. No riding today.

Just came in myself. It was 74 here by 10 am. ROS was calling England this morning to brag about it.

I mostly play with it for relaxation. I make jewelry and Christmas ornaments, that type thing. It's really relaxing working with it, easy to create things, easy to bake (regular oven vs kiln like with ceramics) and pretty cheap. 'Course friends and relatives get sick of getting the stuff from me :)

They're doing fine. We swapped fields so Adge could have more room to run. Sugar is now in the maternity ward. No bagging yet, though.

Well, they're all set now so even if she doesn't give you much warning, she's in the right place.

Not a chance :) First it's too cold for us and then, there's about 6 inches of snow on the ground and it balls up under the horses feet pretty bad. We aren't even getting the horses that are stalled with the small paddocks out into the round pens to exercise right now, for fear they'll start running and jumping and slip and hurt themselves. We had a filly break a shoulder about four years ago and she had to be put down. Now we treat it with the utmost respect.

Hi, this is rose of sharn, using James post as i cant be bothered to change out! You have that much snow? Wow! I miss snow the most. It just doesnt feel like new year here. It was 74 by 10am and we are outside getting hot.
The horses are doing great, i thought Sugar had started to bag up the other day, but no sign now. Guess we are looking at one or two weeks still. Adge is doing great, running his little #$% off! Giving his Mom something to do. He comes to the fence and the children can stroke him, and he is getting more and more used to us every time we go in.
Hope you had a good Christmas and new year.
Sharn

Good morning,
Had a wonderful Christmas and New Years, thanks.

Mares usually go about 342-345 days pregnant. I've got one mare that consistantly foals at 324 days, but the rest go 342 or more. If both mares were bred about the same time, it could still be 2 weeks between foals.

I'd love to be able to give you some of my snow - as a matter of fact, I wouldn't might parting with all of it :)

Boy, you just made my day. It's good to hear though, since you've got another baby on the way.

My first one is due the end of February - hopefully it'll be much warmer here by then.

Rather than take the trees all the way down, just top them to a safe height (I usually leave em between 15 and 20 feet, depending on where they are). Then the birds can use them for habitat and the root system stays in place to hold the soil, but they aren't a risk of falling on something.

I was bored, so I went out and took some pictures. When I went to load them...well, like I said Mack has changed somethings. Wonder if you could tell me something:) Instead of internet explorer we are using firefox. So now when I hit browse to get to the window to tell where to get the picture from what pops up is all greek to me. The window use to say "my Computer" I clicked that and it gave me the numbers of all the pictures on the disc I took out of the camera and put in the computer, and I just clicked those numbers one at a time in each of the browse slots. Now there is no "my computer". Are all those things in that window the same on everyones, or is everyones differnt so you can't tell me:)

LOL,,,does any of this make sense?

Becky
