The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks.... I get a little overwhelmed by electricity... Think we are going to need to have someone look at it to get it working again. The horses have settled down enough to eat the hay in the lean to, my question for the moment is if the circuit just 'went bad' somehow, is it dangerous?

I wish i could take a photo and get it straight on here!
She is so huge, everything is hanging and stretched beyond reason, she has just got back up from laying down and huffing etc and twitching her back legs spasmodicly and holding the top one up high..........you think she is just about to pop and then she gets up and eats some more hay or takes a drink! When I was close yesterday, I saw this huge "shudder" ripple down her belly/back and she groaned and moaned. Then the wind changed and she knew we were there and she was up : (
It really cant be long. She is so much bigger than Misty was. She is eating still, but really slow, takes her a full hour to eat her grain! She hasnt really made a dent in her hay at all, just nibbles on it.
James came home early yesterday for his Mama and I guess she heard his truck!
I think you are right, it should be tonight. However, I couldnt see the waxing this morning, but she wasnt being really helpful. She seemed cross and had broken her feed bucket at some point!

If you can touch her, check her periodically to see how hot she is. They'll really get hot, even break sweat once labor gets going.

During the day that my mare had her foal, I noticed her sweating on and off. Dumb me didn't think much about it. It was rather humid that day, but I should have known the other ones were'nt sweating. Probably mostly will be on her shoulders and chest. Belle, did nibble all day at grass, so they will eat when in labor. Could the rippling you saw yesterday have been the foal moving?

we wired our house, James is the electrician, he is in a meeting right now at work but i could ask him if you need me to. I would just make sure all power was off until you find the cause.

Maybe, maybe not.

Turn off the main breaker in the barn it will be safe to work then and check the wiring from the breaker box to the outlet, it you don't find any breaks in the wiring its probably a bad breaker. Turn off the breaker to the outlet and then turn the main back on. It should be good and dead then even if you have a break in the wiring. That should make it safe for sure until you can get someone to look at it.

Rippling isnt the right word, i cant descrie it, i have seen the foal move lots of times but this was different and she was making some noises and looked sweaty too. I am sure we disturbed her.
I have been trying to give her some space today, but i am heading out the door now to check her and also feed them all again, plus all the other animals.
Will keep u posted.

Oh, and this is just my opinion, but I think mare's who have had foals before do get bigger. Had Misty had one before?

When Dot was born, I thought she seemed a bit scrawny. I asked the vet. I thought with all the food I'd feed the mare the foal would have been more filled out. The vet said first babies are like that, because the mare's uterus has not been stretched to allow much room. And my mare was in such tip top shape anyway, she just never really looked pregnant till the last couple of weeks, and even wasn't that big pregnant wise. I'm anxious to see her now. I'll be taking her to the vet next week to make sure she is in foal than bring her home if she is.

Your experience is really making the next 3 months I have to wait seem far off:)

At the barn I used to work for, one of the things that we did was nucance training. Anything and everything we put those horses through. Tarps, bridges, sacking them out with grain bags, water, cap guns, umbrellas. Have you ever seen a police horse trial? They are so cool. One of the courses I remember, is that to enter, the horse had to push a multicolored beachball that was three times his size out of the way with his chest to get into the ring. Then he had to go past a guy waving a news paper, and then a sleeping guy on a bench that jumped up and opened an umbrella in the horse's face. The horse had to go past something scary in a box that rattled around and made a lot of noise, go over a bridge, through water, over a covered bridge/box made out of trash bags, and then the officer had to shoot a gun from the horse's back. There were probably other things, but that's what I can remember.

You may have an area in there that was hot or arcing and they were getting buzzed before you changed to another circuit. I would get an electrican out to look at the barn.
