Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
By the stage of his wounds and his physical condition he had been roaming awhile. this place out in the country but resacas (tiny rivers) and canals all around. The owner knows most of the people around here. The area is about 2 miles from an interstate highway that goes from San Antonio. If he doesn't live locally he may have been being transported.
I know of a neighbor that got 2 horses because they wondered up on their property. They made a report to the police so there was a date of how long they had the horses. With one of them, a pony that we bought later from them for my daughter, someone did show up and about 2 years after they had it and claimed it. But by then the board bill was to high. I really don't think it was theirs.
I've had several wonder up here. I've always located the owners tho. The last time the horse that showed up was really really nice. I knew someone was freaking. I hung posters and reported it to the police. About 2 days later the police called and asked me to call this man that had just reported a lost horse. She was his. He came and got her the next day. I swear the guy was in tears:), and looked exhausted. I guess they'd been looking for her about non-stop. Turned out she WAS a very expensive brood mare. I knew just from the looks of her she was a nice one. I was very surprised, tho, at the people who told me to "hide" her till whoever gave up. I realized why the guy was so relieved to get her back and why he seemed so surprised that I did report it. I didn't realize there was so many people, people I know, who would hide a lost horse so they could keep it:(
When we first moved here there was a band of wild horses around. The funny thing tho, some of these wild horses were geldings:) I always wondered if they were lost or deliberatly set lose.
Becky
he's a lucky boy. Unless he's local, he made his way thru some dangerous areas to get here.
Wow... Only in a case where I suspected neglect, a starved horse wandering in with poor foot condition that indicates a long time since he'd been cared for properly. Even this one with the injury doesn't mean he was neglected where he was.
I too, would have felt for a guy who was probably somewhere worried sick. Like this dog... I put up flyers, and ran the ad in the paper... and am surprised no one claimed him because he's a nice well behaved pet. I would have hidden him only from that weird woman who called. I don't really think he was hers. Glad she never showed up.
Good morning everyone!
Will she do any advertising of him? My neighbors who had the two, never did much more then make the police report. More or less covering themselves if they had them awhile, which they did.
Becky
Sorry about your mom's stroke, and will pray for her and for your continued strength providing care at home.
He was probably frantic, thinking that someone might have sent her to the meat packers. Did you get a nice reward, like one of her foals?...LOL
Yeah, my conscience wouldn't let me do that. I know I would want someone try and find me if any of mine got loose. We lost a pony, and never found him long time ago. I know how I felt. I always thought my neighbors should put more effort into locating the owners other then a police report. I was very surprised that that was how that guy found me. I don't know if then I would call the police if I lost one. We didn't when the pony took off. Never thought about it. The guy did wait several days before calling, so it was probably about a last resort thing for him. He was very surprised that one had been reported.
Becky
No, no reward. The relief the guy showed was enough, and the thought that maybe, just maybe, if I'm ever in that position someone will return the favor:)
Becky
Thankyou for your prayers. It was quite a time last night.
The arteries in her brain are dying, so I know that I should expect these, but it shook me up when I couldnt wake her. Fortunatly James is only 40 mins away at work.
Sugar is still being crosslegged and keeping that foal to herself. Can't quite believe it! We had lots of cars and things yesterday evening so maybe it was too much for her~
James got the watch last night!
Like everyone has said, she'll probably have it when we are all busy and no one is there.
I probably wont be on here today much as extra care is needed, but if Sugar foals we'll let you know.
Have a good day.
Sharn
Poor guy! I hate to think of him just wandering around lost in his condition.
Inge_Cav had a newly purchased draft mare get out several years ago. I think his other horses were beating up on her and ran her through the fence. She was gone for several days and he found her through the Sherrif's Dept, I think. He reported her lost and the guy who found her reported her found and they got together. Happy ending for everyone. So it never hurts to try.
Not sure about whether I would have thought to call the sherrif... Maybe just because of their size and value a person may call the police if one showed up. I'd certainly know to call them now ;~D
Yeah, lots of good info here this morning.
Another thing I think I'd do, now that I think back, is not give a description of the horse when I reported it. Then have the person trying to claim it describe the horse to me before I just handed it over. I can't imagine anybody trying to claim an animal that wasn't theirs, but stranger things have happened, as you discovered.
I think some people may hesitate to call the police to report losing one because then they would be responsible for any damages, such as if someone hit it on the road..??
Becky
Might be. I know I was when that filly of mine got out and got hit. But I later found out that in the State of Alabama, you aren't responsible for damage caused by roaming livestock of any kind unless it can be proven that you are guilty a pattern of neglect in letting them get out. The laws might be different elsewhere, but it's something that anybody who owns any type of livestock would be wise to check out.
Certainly I'd fear damages they'd caused, but I can't imagine the fear of damages being greater than my desire to get the horse back alive and soon if he was safe. Here, there's nowhere they can go but to the road. If my horse was hit I wouldn't be able to miss it. No open country they could roam off through, everything's heavily wooded, fenced, or developed except the road.
The horse that got loose from across the street here went straight down the road. I was a little surprised he didn't come to my fence to visit with mine, and create a commotion I would see in my horses. I didn't know there was a loose horse till the girls at the store told me. It was a bay horse, so everyone thought it was mine.
Hi everyone, Did the horse that turned up have any tack on? I would worry that someone may have had a fall.......and be injured.
