Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Carrying it is the easy part. :')
I think I'm gonna leave on that one. Thanks alot BigMac for firmly planting visions of men who look like giant stuffed toad-frogs in my head right before I go to sleep. GROOOOOSS!
No baby yet. We're keeping a close watch on her, but we've had our hands full tonight. My Mom had a stroke this evening, and Sharn was here alone with her when it happened. She had to call me home from work, and is pretty shook up. Please keep them both in your prayers.
We'll let you know when the little one arrives.
I think that is about the same size as Sugar, but she's not that red.
Oh no. Sorry to hear that. Your mom and your family in my prayers.
Thank you, the prayers are very much appreciated. I think we have everything under control now. My Mom is resting, and Sharn is on her way to bed. She had quite a time this evening, and is still very shaky.
Just checked on Sugar, she's in her usual spot for the night. Fortunately, she's within sight of the balcony off our bedroom, so I can check on her without having to go out there. If anything changes, we'll post the news.
I am so sorry, praying for your Mom and for your whole family.
I forgot to tell yall that a sick and injured horse wandered up to the stables. He had hurt his back and big splinter like stuff with scabs coming off. The owner put him on antibiotics and doing wouund care and he's doing a lot better. He's very gentle and comfortable around people. She thinks he's a young horse. She told me it wasn't that unusual for him to show up here because they want to be around other horses.
No reports anywhere of missing horses? Surely someone is looking for this kid unless he fell out of a trailer somewhere. Please keep me updated on how he's doing and bless your stable owner :)
No one has claimed him yet. I asked her if she got to keep him if they didn't and she said maybe but thinks he has an owner looking for him and will eventually find him. He sure is skinned up on his back close to his withers.
Do you have any mountain lions in that area (panthers)? Does it look like he fell or was attacked by something or what? Or maybe went through a fence or barn wall.
Just coyotes really. It looks like he fell or hit some kind of old wood and it went deep enough to scab over. She pulled a piece off about palm size yesterday. I guess it had pushed out because it didn't cause him any discomfort.
Good night everyone - bedtime for me tonight.
Night
One last post - that doesn't sound like a new injury does it? Maybe a fence or something. Anyway, I'll check tomorrow first thing. I'm been working on a newsletter for three days and I'm totally burned out I think. AND work tomorrow.
I'll be praying for ya'll too and I'm glad to hear the situation is better. I'm sure Sharn and the kids were scared to death.
Hopefully you'll have a new baby on the ground this morning to cheer everyone up.
That's really weird about the injured horse. If he's been loose long enough for a wound to scab over and start festering stuff out, then who ever owns him may have given him up for dead. There's not many times a loose horse avoids getting run over, even for just a few hours.
I had 2 strange horses show up at by BIL's place where I keep my mares. They were just standing at the gate early one morning when I went to get the horse trailer for a ride. They were both geldings but I couldn't let them in with my mares and foals because the mares were already trying to kill them through the fence. I caught them and put them in the barn and went to the nearest place I knew of that had horses but nobody knew anything about them. I was going to call Animal Control to see if anyone had called about missing horses, then maybe the local Vet's offices, then maybe the Sheriff's office, but I didn't know if they got those kind of calls or not. Luckily I didn't have to do all that because my FIL and his buddy know EVERYBODY and the next day they found out that they belonged to some people who's land adjoins my BIL's way back on the back of his 80 acre cow pasture. A tree had fallen on the fence, which was old to start with and they came through that way. Otherwise I don't think they'd have made it that far in the dark without getting run over.
I hope the owner turns up and will pay for his vet bills. Nursing an injured horse can get expensive and time consuming. But if they don't, maybe she can sell the horse after it gets well get her money back out of it that way.
Good morning.
deaconjim, Rose: I'm very sorry about your mother.
Becky
The Rails-to-Trail here is paved, with a dirt section on the side for horses. If not for our horse club cleaning up, donating time and money, we would have most certainly be shut out. This trail, when complete will reach from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. Trouble is, not all sections will permit horses. :(
