The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, then, since she didn't have it last night, I'd go with what the book says about 2-4 days from when they waxed, which would put it the earliest, tomorrow:)

I am just sure by the grin (and she does really grin!) that she will just wait until she knows I am busy and then have it! She is my favorite and talks to me a lot and when i was putting out her bedding yesterday she was just nuzzling as sweet as you can be to my neck and shoulder. If it was Misty or Lightning I would have been worried, but Sugar just likes to love!
As you could see from my posts yesterday, I was out there with coffee a lot and there was no way after all that coffee I was going to sleep anyhow!
We'll see what today/tonight brings........Just say a little prayer that everything goes smoothly please : )

My farrier canceled again today. His truck is still broke down, he had to order parts. But he says as soon as he is up and running I'm first on the list. Cold anyway. It will be a good day to start burning the dead fall out in the pasture anyway.I'd Stay warm and get something done.

That sounds like a plan to me.

Pogonip here again today. We also had a farrier scheduled but Bob called and canceled. Way too cold to be standing still out in it for any length of time.

It's that freezing fog that leaves ice crystals on trees, fences, etc. Indians around here called it the white death. I can see why. You'd get covered in a sheet of ice if you stayed out long, plus you get so sick of it you're ready to commit homicide :)

The afore mentioned trail pictures from this weekend...

This is a picture of the steps going down to one of the creek crossings. I've never seen steps like these on a horse trail anywhere else. They are at least 12 to 18 inches high each and the bottom one has been washed out some and is higher than that. You've always heard the old saying "Watch out for that last step coz it's a doosie", well, it really is here...

Hi, just got back in, 10 mins ago, Sugar who had been laying down for a while startied making some heavy noises, her tail was up and you could see huge contractions ripple her back end. Something was definatly going on, James came out to see, and I am not sure if she heard, but she stopped, laid quiet and then got up to take some water.
We made a show of coming back in, but will head out to the workshop quietly with a camera in a few mins.

That's a pretty cool obstacle! I'd be a lot more comfortable goin' back up than down, I think!

Quietness around her is always good, but once she really goes in, she will hit a point of no return and you should be able to quietly watch. Her timing is good! Nice day-time birth when temps are on the increase is a smart move for her. What's your weather today?

This is a picture of the remains an old still we found down in a "holler". These things are EVERYWHERE. If you see a cove with a little stream at the bottom, chances are you'll find one of these somewhere but the "Revenooers" chopped 'em all up though....

That's better than 25. ;~D is it dry out? I think that would be the important thing.

Yes its very dry and the sun is shinning. I have been just in a denim shirt outside and it felt good.

This is the waterfall at the head of the cove where we found the still. I didn't have an octopus attached to the camera, that's just my gloved hand trying to shield the sun off the camera lense....
