The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You're lucky this time... there's no snow on the ground right now. But there will be, there will be. :-)

Our year was pretty normal until the day after Thanksgiving when it dropped 6 inches of snow out here. Since then we have had freezing fog, snow, record lows, more snow, ice and more snow. Weathermen tell us it's the worst since 1916. We usually have 360 days of sunshine. I don't think we've had 7 days of it in the past two months.

Mornin'.

I'm thinking of buying a dressage saddle. I don't want to spend a bunch of money so I thought I'd look for a good used saddle, as opposed to a cheap new one. I've been looking around on the internet, ebay and Bucks County Saddlery, and I haven't made a decision. For anybody interested, I've bought 3 saddles from Bucks County, one used cheapie kid saddle and 2 new Pessoa Rodrigos and they've always treated me well.

Good luck with that! Ever ridden in an english or dressage saddle before?

Good morning everyone!

Good morning everyone!~
This inexperienced rider HAS used an English saddle! LOL In fact when I came over here I was surprised at the difference with the western saddles. I prefer the western though as it makes me feel a little more secure!

Well, good morning to both of you!

I've always ridden English... I prefer it for me... I like the saddles for their light weight and the feel of the horse compared to the older Western saddles that were so heavy and rigid. Newer Western saddles are much improved though! Lighter weight and closer contact, and you're right they are more secure for starting out, better handles to hang on to.

How are the mom, babe, and mom-to-be this morning?

I love dressage saddles. I think that they're very comfortable.

Well James is feeding horses and I am here! Misty and Adge are great, Adge is growing so fast and Misty looks really well. Sugar has bagged up, but no sign of little one as yet. We are watching her closely. She rolled a lot yesterday and got herself looking like a gray horse, so we cleaned and brushed her down and got her looking really pretty again and guess what shes gone and done again. Do you think shes trying camouflage so that she gets privacy when she has the foal? LOL

I used to think my grey horse was intentionally trying to be dirtier than everyone else! White horses are deliberate pigs, I agree!
