Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
We've been watching the Rose Bowl Parade. It's my favorite one:). Those floats are truly amazing. I really enjoy seeing the horses too. The Andalusian and Lipazzanes (sp:) were really cool looking. I've noticed tho there seems to be less and less horses in the groups:). I remember when there use to be big big groups of them. I especially remember seeing one time a group of Palaminos, all in western tack. Those horses never bobbled once, down the street they went in perfect formation. That didn't seem to happen much this year:). After I became familiar with horses, I remember thinking back to that group of Palaminos and being amazed how well they did. In reality tho, it's fun to see the horses prancing and going sidewise abit:). I'm afraid I'd be freaking out if it was me. But the riders always looked so calm. Made me wonder if the horse was doing it or the rider asking the horse to do it even if it put them out of sync with the rest...????
There was a man in it, 96 years old, I think he was on a mule. It was his 20th time in it. What a rush to be in a parade like that:)

Near here where I live the local University has a parade every fall but they won't let horses participate. Something to do with insurance and clean-up.
When I was growing up I rode in the local town parade and rodeo every year, it was alot of fun. They don't do it anymore. The little town is now a good sized city with alot of traffic. Don't suppose it would be feasible to shut down the highway for a parade. And the city arena was torn down for a playground.
We have horses in the Nevada Day Parade here, although the numbers are decreasing. Horses also play a big part in any of the small town parades for the Fourth, Christmas, etc. We are hoping to get our ranch in the next Nevada Day parade as an entry, or as part of the Horseman's Assoc. entry. Parade just has to have horses :)
I agree about parades... love the horses as well as the floats. :~D Bay's been in parades, and reportedly so has Cyn, but I've never ridden in one :~D
Wow, that's exciting. My son and husband are into guns. My son is very proud of his 20 gauge. He doesn't get to use it here, only at my in laws in Abilene. They are way out in the boonies and have 250 acres or so. Not much chance of hitting anybody out there.
Don't be impressed with the acreage, it's dirt cheap out there on the windy prairie.
I shoot a 20 too... as effective on birds and clay pigeons as a 12, but you can shoot it all day and not have a bruised shoulder. ;~D
I used to shoot it alot. every week that same girlfriend Lisa and I used to go to the gun club at night and shoot skeet. I quit shooting it so much when my ole Labrador Logan had to retire from hunting. It's good affordable fun, and I'd like to get into it again.
We were going to buy a box of clay pigeons to shoot up today, but the store was out of them. We made do today with a few lids and jugs we could toss into the air. :~D
Your shooting looks like fun:)
Just got back. The weather was so nice we fired up the bike, put in Frampton:) and down the road we went. Ate a good barbeque meal, stopped by some friends play Yatzee, then came home. Fun night.

I've rode a some local parades. I even got to carry the American Flag in one. Parades are fun.
Of course then I was still a pretty new rider. Then I started learning a little about horses and was able to see all the potential dangers, and got scared to ride in them anymore.
Becky
Aired the tires up, fired er up, Becky got on the back, thru Frampton in the CD and rode like the wind!
Glad you two had a good ride!
Isn't it funny that you did just fine before you knew how dangerous it was? :~D
I'd be afraid for them not finding their footing if they jumped at something. I'd want to put them in rubber shoes for traction.
Yeah, when I was riding in parades, my horses were shoed and everything. I didn't Know better. Now, IF I even rode in another, they'd be barefoot, or I'd have borium(sp) on them. Knowledge does strange things to a person:)
Becky
AND, I was riding an Arab:) carrying a flag. I still marvel at that.
Becky
How about those rubber booties you have? would they work pretty well?
AND:) I rode him in is FIRST parade.
This just gets better and better...uh...or worse and worse depending on your presepctive:)
Becky
HHHUUUUUMMMMMMMM.....maybe.

I'd have to break Bay in to the idea of a flag. We played one of those flag relay games here one day, where you pick up a flag and run and put it in another barrel and it's timed? ~That~ was a riot.
That was a fun day, invited friends over and we played several games.
I did have enough sense to get him use to a flag before the parade. But I just walked up to him with it and let it flap and wave on him. Never thought twice when he was wigging out at first, just kept on till he stopped....God protects the ignorant:)
Becky
Is that picture really ya'll?
I adore Peter Frampton!!! I saw him at the Tarrant County Convention Center back in the 70's.
Don't you just love it when neighbors you hate disappear? They are nothing but a wart on the butt of humanity.
