The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning, only 5 or so here today in Chicago area, but the sun is out, kids all have coughs and chest colds so will hang out at home, drink lots of tea, just as well with these cold temps. Animals are all doing good. I love the beautiful long hair on Cezar, his winter coat, it is beautiful. We have a beautiful new winter coat/blanket for him, but he will not wear it. We have tried...patiently but he wants nothing to do with it, but he does seem fine, warm all over. The barn is just white steel barn, his door faces east, he just stands out there basking in the sun as it comes up and gets nice and hot against that white barn.

You around?

I was not around! Sorry.... I went to bed early and still slept late!

~Sip~

Fun pictures in your snow, do you think you'll get it again or is this something that doesn't happen every year?

Morning. I was having trouble posting pics again. Nothing in paste. I was going to yahoo from mozilla. When I opened FR up by M explorer though it worked. Don't know if that was the problem or a coincidence. Funny. I didn't get any pop ups when I did.

Joshua looking at the snow pictures this morning. I was kind of disappointed. The pics so much better on paper than the disc. Anyway, he was excited and suddenly started screaming. "look! Horses!!!! More horses!":')

What have you tried? Is he afraid of you walking near him with it or what? Thay can be a little spooky about them at first, You'll want to have ahold of him, but if you can get it fastened on correctly and you turn them out to buck and try to shake it off a little, they'll ignore it within minutes.

I love the beautiful long hair on Cezar, his winter coat, it is beautiful... he does seem fine, warm all over. The barn is just white steel barn, his door faces east, he just stands out there basking in the sun

If he has a good winter coat and shelter out of the weather so that he doesn't get (and stay) both wet and cold, he really never ~needs~ blanketing. I blanket mine because I don't like the long winter coat to grow, for one, and also because we get long periods of both cold and wet. It isn't uncommon for us to have snow on the ground and rain falling on top of it. unblanketed and out in that, they can get in trouble. But if you blanket at the start of the year like I do, they have to stay blanketed 24/7 whenever the temps are below a threshold (mine is 49). Yours is acclimated and has a place to get out of it, so unless he gets soaked through and then a cold night, he'll be fine. Even blanketed, I close mine in at night when it's wet for weeks on end. I do this because they are spoiled, and because I think it's good for them to have a chance to dry out skin and foot thoroughly every night.

Morning.... I slept in :~D

Cold here this morning, 28.... but no hint of snow, will warm up and rain each day in the forecast, and freeze at night, so they think.

Well, I asked the trainer where the cold weather was she was anticipating. She told me she didn't say immediately but thinks we will get at least 2 more cold spells before spring.:') Well see lol

ecurbh said the copy/pasting of your pic properties should work near the same in mozilla as in IE... Not sure why it wasn't working.

It got down in the mid-upper 40's last night but it's dry and the critters stayed out. Okies blanket in though. I have to go pay her today. I'll try to remember the camera while I'm playing dress up with them:')

40's really isn't too cold for any horse that is acclimated. I choose that threshhold to prevent them from gorwing the coat at all. They stay ~near summer slick on their body, though they still grow the coat on neck and legs where the blanket doesn't cover.

Ask him if it works if I open york up in yahoo and paste and go to mozilla for FR. That's what I was doing because York didn't show me registered under mozilla. Maybe I was just missing a charcter or something but I got it working. Opening FR from yahoo might not have had a thing to do with it.
