The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm amazed that these people were shooting off fireworks with horses on their property.

I sure feel for you, there really is hardly anything you can do, except try to protect yourself, your family and your property.

There is no one to blame here except for the parents. They are USELESS human beings. What was that line I saw in a movie once, "you need a license to drive a car and even a license to catch a fish, but any butt-reaming a$$hole can have a kid."

I think the parents attitude is "boy's will be boys, there's nothing you can do about it,"

Now how on earth did I manage a blank post... Odd. And yes, there is a whole lot of stupid everywhere, I agree. :-)

So was I, when we first moved here. Luckily, they are the only ones in the neighborhood who do it. Just bad luck that I happen to be next to them.

"boys will be boys, there's nothing you can do about it."

One of the scariest lines you'll ever hear and a huge parenting mistake.

Happy New Year, all.

Gonna be 70 degrees with sunshine. Guess you guys know what I'll be doing today.

It was quiet out here last night. Of course, I didn't make it till midnight, but there wasn't any fireworks before then. I shot my pistol off a few times around 8:00 to see what the horses would do. They just stood there. Unbelievable.

I know the movie you're talking about, but can't remember the title. Keanu Reeves said it.

I'm rather excited. A year or so ago I bought some Aracuna chickens. I liked the blue eggs. They have all since been killed by coyotes, but not before I did get some of their egss incubated this summer. I wasn't sure tho if I would get blue eggs from these chickens as they may be half breeds. But I got a blue egg today:). I knew it was about time for that batch of chicks to be laying age. Maybe I'll get more then from this one hen.

That has its limits though. There's "boys will be boys" and then there's reckless endangerment.

My horses do really well around gunfire too... Nothing I've done to desensitize them, but one of the places we ride has a trailhead right by our local gun club and they've always been OK with the sortof periodic popping of gunfire-sounding fireworks. Gunfire is over before they can get up a head of steam about it, I think. The ones that seem to give them the willies are the fireworks like whistling petes and the other kind of buzzy things that don't stop, but build in intensity over a minute or two.

Good Morning and Happy New Year - Wishing you all the very best in 2005, may your heart's desire be realized.

I didn't make it to midnight, 9:30 was it. No fireworks here or anywhere nearby. More snow last night, another 2inches here.

We had neighbors next door with three boys who were horrid, not surprising since their parents were too. We put padlocks on the gate and the tack room. Finally, one of them stole money out of a purse in a car in our driveway. Friend was over visiting. We called the police, turned out they knew the family and the boys. The one boy was on probation and his probation ended up revoked. They finally got far enough behind in house payments that house was repossessed and they are gone. Thank goodness. Everyone on the block despised them and we were very glad to see them go. I had called the Humane Society on them three times over their care of their horses.

You all have a very good day - I think I'll be cleaning house and doing laundry. If we can get to the shed to get the boxes, the Christmas tree comes down too.
