Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I havent' read through all the posts but thought I would add something to the colic/founder discussion. A horse doesn't have to to colic in order to founder, I have a cushings pony that will founder if you look at him cross-eyed. Also, if he gets too hot, like on 100 degree days, I have to hose him down 2 or 3 times a day or he will founder.
As a matter of fact, the first time he foundered the only thing we can figure out that got him was the heat. He wasn't on grass, wasn't sick, wasn't worked hard, etc. None of the usual causes of founder.
I put a nitro patch on my founder prone pony's feet, in the back right where leg meets hoof, when he foundered. That's the quickest he's ever gotten over a founder. It was tricky to use, though. You can't touch it and it can only stay on for a few hours.
I was reading your post about the stinky boots that the cat peed in and I almost spit my coffee out. There is one place in my tack room where the cats peed when they accidently got locked in. It's a cement floor but that smell ain't coming out. It's not too strong when the air is dry but if it's raining or humid you can't hardly go in there.
I swear, cat pee smell is impossible to get rid of.
Tristan was a riot.
If you like to read funny vet books, "The Animals in My Life" and "More Animals in My Life" by Grant Kendall are really good. Nobody is as good as James Herriot, though.
Siegfried was the boss.
Good morning

Great books and I highly recommended them. They are still in print or you can get them at the library.
Yes it was. I kept on thinking "Abby is TOAST". They would've never let her go in real life though. Somebody would've found her several weeks later in a weedy lot somewhere with a bullet in the back of her head.
That's a neat trick and a good one to know about! How'd you find out about it and how does it work? Does it increase circulation or something?
Let us know if there's movement on the baby front!
Is a nitro patch something for people with heart conditions? What does that do?
Good morning! Anything on your agaend today?
err... agenda today?
~sip~
I think, when they founder, the blood vessels constrict. The nitro patch opens the blood vessels to get blood to their feet. It sure worked for this pony, he was over it quicker than I've ever seen.
You are correct, it is for people with heart conditions. I think it works on the same principle, gets the blood flowing. I got the nitro from a friend that was an equine science major and she had a horse rehab clinic up near Colorado State University.
