The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, and do you notice "more" shine after using it then you get from the other wormers? or is that my imagination:)

I've always gotten the impression from vets, that it is not one of their favorites, that one and safeguard. I think it's because from so much frequent use, probably because those are the cheaper ones, that vets feel worms are to immune to them.

Personally I don't like safe guard at all. I see no change in the horses when I use it, no shedding, no shine.

I wonder if it is dry in the casino?

I haven't really noticed a difference in coat condition, but I just may not be paying attention. I'll have to do that the next time I use it. Here lately I've been using ivermectin exclusively coz it's been on sale for SO cheap (less than $4 a tube), but I know I need to go back to my rotation.

I used to include Quest in my rotation too, but my vet said he didn't use it or sell it any more and didn't recommend it. He said he'd done post mortems on several horses who had been on it (they died of other causes) and found them to FULL of worms. And it's supposed to be BETTER than ivermectin. So go figure.

No, I have not. What is there? Riding, site seeing? The trails I rode before were in Cades Cove. Hopefully, the Mountain Laurel and Azaleas will be blooming then (early April). Do you know of any sporting clays/trap clubs in the area?

I don't know that I have had notable experience with that particular wormer. I haven't kept real close track of when I've given each one. I have always watched for colic after worming but never had too much trouble.

Good morning!

I don't care for Quest either. The ranch I worked at starting useing it when it first came out. I thought the horses all showed symptoms, rough coat, no shine, of having worms even tho they wormed with it as the directions stated.

Funny, IMO, these people used it because it cost more...they're thinking, I think, is if it cost more it must be good.

I really like it, even with this problem. There is such, IMO:), a big change in their coat afterit, bigger then with the other brands, that I feel it must really really clean them out.

I've used it on so many different horses, and seen the same result, that I really don't think it's just my imagination.

I usually buy one of everything they've got on hand to cycle through, so I have probably used it!

So, what do you think of this new craze on worming horses for tape worms??? Is it something the wormer producers have come up with to charge more for thier wormers, or is it a legitmate concern.

I've been thinking the next time it's time for me to use an ivermec, I'd get that Zimectrin Gold, just to be safe. But I've never wormed for tape worms in the horses before.

I don't know.... actually didn't even know there was a craze! Tape worms are carried by fleas aren't they? -unless they have another 'host'... and horses don't get fleas.

Well worming for tape worms is sweeping this area:) and Yes, that was my understanding about tape worms, they come from fleas, and I've never noticed that any of my horses had fleas:)

But all the big horse worms, Zimectrin, etc, have come out with a wormer that cleans out tape worms. It's more expensive of course:). That's why I've been wondering. Last summer I had alot of people ask me if I had wormed for tape worms, and suddenly started seeing the horse wormers that took care of them and adverisements in magazines about them. That's why I thought it was a craze.

Oh, and just FYI:), did you know that Rotectin 1 and 2 are made by the same company that came out with Zemectrin. IMO, they realized because Zemectrin cost more, people still rotated, even tho according to Zemectrin you didn't have too. I think they came up with the Rotectrin's to get the rotators. The only problem I saw with it tho was they Rotectrin that "didn't" kill bots, the cheap one, was STILL more expensive then antehilcide:).

It was a conspiracy:)

Horse's skin is too thick for fleas to be able to bite through, was my understanding as to why they don't have fleas.

So I dunno.... worth asking the vet ;~D

It's always a conspiracy...

Liquid Plumber and Draino are made by the same company I think, and they've been advertising against each other for years ;~D

No, I have not. What is there? Riding, site seeing?

Maggie Valley is about 10 miles from Cherokee. It's mostly tourist with the usual RV parks, restaurants and souvenir shops.

I used to go a big Blue Grass festival they have once a year there.

Never been riding around there and don't know about shooting clubs in that area, even though I'm sure there must be some.

You'll only be about 90 miles from my house.

Good morning, did you see the photo of the barn I posted? James thinks i need to get of my cloud and down to reality! LOL It was part of a log cabin trail reserve we stayed on, and we could bed the horses there.

Good morning,

I haven't ever used that wormer so I don't know anything about how it works. It must be very strong to have the effect you're describing. Have you ever thought about using only a half dose at a time?

It's 1 degree here this morning, everything is frozen :) Looks like we'll get sunshine today though. The prediction is for temperatures in the low 30's. The temperature at your place must have just dropped for nothing to have frozen.
