The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah. I wasn't even thinking about the cold but rain. Sorry. Sometimes I forget that not everyone lives in south Texas. It's just a lot of work for me. I was in an accident when I was little. My dad flipped the trailer over. My horses were ok but I constantly watch now and frequently want to check the hitch. I might be more comfortable with a goose neck. And then when you stop what's with people? They want to come over usually with their kids and pet the "horsies". I wish this part was fun to me but it's not. Just a means of getting somewhere.

That's one of the things that I really like about the gooseneck. The neck drops down on the ball and about the only way it's going to come loose is pull off the bed of the truck and part of the frame. Also, horses throwing a fit in the trailer will move a bumper pull all over the road but it doesn't much effect the gooseneck.

With the bumper pull I'd check the hitch every time we stopped, I have finally gotten over that with the gooseneck. I still walk around and check the tires, but at least I don't stress so much over the hitch. :)

I don't know that I could pull a trailer if I'd been around to have one flip. That had to be terrifying.

I have a 2 horse slant with a seperate tack room in front. Bumper pull, steel. Windows that can be removed. It is great for what I do. When I get to my rides, I unload the horses, set up a cot, and a camp table, with a coleman cook stove, a portapotty, and chair. It's like a living room. The windows leak a bit if it rains hard, but the water just runs down the walls, so I stay dry. Well, now we have an RV, that I can pull the trailer with, so camping is a lot of fun:).

You're going to have a ball then one your competitive rides. And with the RV you're going to have tons of new friends :)

Your trailer sounds nice. We finally outgrew a two horse, although yours sounds just like my DIL's. She uses it for endurance rides mostly, but pulls it to shows if we have too many horses for our trailer and need the extra room.

LOL - I can't remember how many years it's been since I've been agile enough to kick the stirrups and jump down. My knee hurts just thinking about it. You should have gotten extra points for that.

We went "looking" one day. I saw the goosenecks with living quarters built into the trailer. Nice but I couldn't figure it out. You aren't going to be in it when pulling (I hope) and the horses aren't going to be in it when you stop for the night (I hope) So why the door from the living quarters to the trailer? I guess you might use it if you pulled over in bad weather or something but I couldn't figure out what else for:')

Well, I couldn't do it now probably, but that was the adreneline and nerves from being in front of the judge. Like I say, I tend to rush obstacles, don't think them thru, and screw them up.

Well, sometimes you're overnight or at a show where you want the horses in the trailer. If it's roomy enough they are fine there as long as they are taken out and exercised every once in awhile.

And, something like that would be great for Bob when he goes hunting. He's learned he can't tie Indy overnight 'cause he just unties himself or breaks the rope or the halter. He doesn't leave, just won't stand tied overnight. (He'll stand all day at a show - curious isn't it)

That was last summer. My first trip driving the RV with the trailer without Mack with me. choctawsquaw, the girl in the picture went with me. We had a blast. It was an all womens pleasure weekend ride at a state park about and hour and a half from here. I've also competed there. It's a tougher ride then the one I want to go to in the spring, but still not as tough as the one in Ark.

Is it difficult to learn to drive the RV and pull a trailer?

No, at least not on the highways. And according to Mack its' the same anywhere, I've just got a mind thing going about taking it down narrower roads, and up and down twisty turny roads. You know, the trailer just goes where ever the RV does:). Pulling a trailer has never bothered me, driving a vehicle that large does.

My horse can undo locks and untie ropes. He scared the hell out of me one day. I tied him up to the trailer and he was not happy about it and pawing when I walked off to the barn. A few minutes later I felt this breathing on my neck and jerked around and he was standing right behind me.

As for as the trailer if I was going to invest money in something like that I would want a drivable one but I haven't seen anyway. You know, when it's "honey, will you make me a sandwich" I can get up and go check on the horses too. Inge Cav suggested I look for used transporter trucks and convert one.

I think I'd have a problem with that. It took me awhile to be comfortable with the goosenect because it's so long, and I hate driving the truck except on open road because it's a dually and I just know I'll hit something.
